| Boilerpipe Text | How Hard Is It to Climb to Everest Base Camp?
While you won’t need technical climbing skills, trekking to Everest Base Camp still requires a good level of physical fitness and mental resilience. The route to Everest Base Camp involves long trekking days and sustained altitude gain, making the experience physically demanding.
With proper preparation,
training
, and acclimatisation days (Days 5 and 8 in your EverTrek itinerary), the EBC trek is very achievable for most explorers.
You’re Ready for the Everest Base Camp Trek if You Can Do These 3 Things
You can hike for
4-6 hours
with a backpack weighing around
6-8kg
.
You can hike uphill and downhill sections with a total
elevation gain of 500-800m
without feeling completely drained.
You can do
back-to-back hikes
over the weekend to mimic the multi-day nature of the trek.
For information, take a look at what High Altitude Personal Trainer, Adam Gawley, has to say about
his EBC trek training
.
___
What Can You Expect On The Everest Base Camp Trek
Altitude Challenges:
The trek reaches an altitude of 5,550m (alt) at Kalapatthar, where the thinner air and reduced oxygen levels can make even simple tasks feel more demanding.
As you gain height, it’s common to experience symptoms of altitude sickness such as headaches, fatigue, or shortness of breath.
Proper acclimatisation, steady pacing and staying well hydrated all play a key role in how well your body adapts.
Duration:
The trek typically lasts around 11 days, with 8 days ascending and 3 days descending, although in reality the trail is up and down from start to finish.
You’ll usually be trekking for 5-8 hours per day at a steady pace, with some longer or more challenging days as you reach higher altitudes.
Terrain:
The route to Everest Base Camp is varied but you can expect:
-
Steep ascents and descents throughout the trek.
-
Rocky and uneven mountain paths.
-
Glacial terrain as you approach Base Camp.
- Suspension bridges crossing deep valleys and rivers.
The trek isn’t technical, but the combination of altitude, distance and terrain makes it rewarding.
Weather:
Temperatures can drop well below zero, especially at night, so you’ll need to be prepared for cold conditions. |

### 15-Day Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal
Namaste! And welcome to Nepal. It’s time to start your Everest Base Camp Trek adventure.
Your Everest Base Camp trek begins in Kathmandu, Nepal’s vibrant capital city, often called the gateway to the Himalayas.
You should arrange your international flights to arrive at **Tribhuvan International Airport** on Day 1 of your itinerary. We recommend choosing a flight that arrives in the morning or early afternoon local time. Due to travel and time zone differences, most trekkers depart from their home country the day before the itinerary officially begins.
After arriving in Kathmandu, you’ll have plenty of time to rest and recover from your journey. Relax at the hotel, explore your new surroundings, and experience the energy of Kathmandu.
We’ll host a group welcome meal at one of our favourite local restaurants. Depending on arrival times, this may take place on **Day 1 or Day 2** of your Everest Base Camp itinerary. Meet your fellow trekkers, enjoy traditional Nepali cuisine, and soak up some local culture with live music and dance.
**Altitude:** 1,300m (4,264 ft)
Accommodation: Hotel Aloft, Kathmandu
Day 2 Sightseeing, Trek Prep & Transfer to Ramechhap
Day 2 is all about exploring and preparing for the upcoming trek to Everest Base Camp.
You'll enjoy a guided tour of the cultural heart of the Kathmandu Valley, visiting some of its iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We’ll also stop for lunch at one of our favourite city viewpoints, a great way to soak in the scenery while helping your body adjust to the altitude before continuing your Everest trek into the Himalayas.
In the afternoon, we’ll hit the road for a scenic 5–6 hour drive to Mulkot. If you didn’t have your welcome meal in Kathmandu on Day 1, you’ll enjoy it this evening instead — a great chance to connect with your fellow trekkers before the journey begins.
This sets us up for an early start tomorrow (3:30–4:30am) to reach Ramechhap Airport for your short flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region and the starting point of your journey towards Mount Everest Base Camp.
Due to upgrades at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan Airport, most Lukla flights now operate from Ramechhap — a change introduced by Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority in 2019. While a small number of flights still depart from Kathmandu, they’re often delayed, so Ramechhap is often used as it’s the most reliable route to begin your Everest Base Camp adventure.
Don’t worry, EverTrek takes care of all additional logistics and accommodation included in your trip cost. All we ask for is a little flexibility… The Himalayas always reward the patient as your Everest Base Camp trek officially gets underway.
**Altitude:** 1,218m (4,000 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel Aloft, Kathmandu
Day 3 Kathmandu - Ramechhap - Lukla - Phakding
The flight to Lukla is truly one of the highlights of the adventure and marks the exciting start of your Everest Base Camp trek.
Soaring above the Himalayas, you’ll take in breathtaking mountain views before landing at the iconic Tenzing-Hillary Airport. This is a bucket-list moment for many trekkers beginning their journey to Mount Everest Base Camp.
Once on the ground, you’ll meet the rest of your trekking crew and porters, who will be with you every step of your Everest trek through the Khumbu region.
Not long after landing, your trek officially begins. You’ll follow a stone-paved trail through Lukla, passing colourful prayer rocks, mani walls, and traditional Sherpa villages. It’s a peaceful introduction to trekking in the Himalayas and the first stage of your trek to Everest Base Camp.
Today’s walk is relatively gentle, descending gradually toward Phakding. Upon arrival, you'll enjoy a well-earned lunch and have the afternoon free to explore. You might choose to wander through the village or take a short hike to the nearby monastery (Gompa) for a glimpse into local spiritual life.
Tonight, you’ll settle into a lodge in Phakding, your first night in the mountains as your Everest Base Camp adventure continues.
**Altitude:** 2,652m (8,700 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 4 Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaarft
After a hearty breakfast in Phakding, you'll hit the trail toward the bustling mountain hub of Namche Bazaar as your Everest Base Camp trek continues deeper into the Khumbu region.
The route follows the scenic Dudh Koshi River, crossing three dramatic suspension bridges and passing through charming Sherpa villages like Zapute, Toktok, Benkar, and Chumoa. Along the way, you'll enjoy rest stops in local teahouses and soak up the energy of the Himalayas during this unforgettable stage of your Everest trek.
At Monjo, the gateway to Sagarmatha National Park, your guides will take care of entry permits while you relax with a hot drink or browse the local shops. From here, the trail dips and climbs again, with one final challenge: a tough but rewarding two-hour ascent to Namche.
As you near the top, the views open up and, if the weather’s clear, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Mt. Everest — a memorable milestone for many trekkers on their journey to Mount Everest Base Camp, alongside stunning peaks like Lhotse and Kusum Khangru.
You’ll spend the night in a lodge in Namche Bazaar, your first stop in the heart of Sherpa country and an important acclimatisation point on the trek to Everest Base Camp.
**Altitude:** 3,440m (11,283 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 5 Acclimatisation Day in Namche Bazaar
Today is an important acclimatisation day as you continue your Everest Base Camp trek, allowing your body time to safely adjust before heading higher into the Himalayas.
But this is far from a rest day. Staying active is essential for altitude adaptation, and Namche Bazaar provides the ideal base for exploring while preparing for the next stages of your trek to Everest Base Camp.
This morning, you’ll set off to visit the famous Tenzing Norgay statue, where you’ll be treated to an unforgettable photo opportunity with Mt. Everest and the surrounding Himalayan giants towering behind you. Next, you'll explore the fascinating Sherpa Museum, offering deep insight into the unique culture, traditions, and mountaineering history of the Khumbu region.
From there, your hike continues up to the world-renowned Everest View Hotel. Sitting high above Namche, this is one of the best vantage points for taking in sweeping views towards Mount Everest Base Camp and the surrounding peaks — a perfect reward for your efforts.
After soaking in the scenery, you'll descend back to Namche for the evening, ready to rest and acclimatise before continuing your Everest Base Camp adventure.
**Altitude:** 3,440m (11,283 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 6 Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
After breakfast, you'll depart Namche Bazaar and begin following the famous Pangboche trail as your Everest Base Camp trek continues further into the heart of the Himalayas, offering some of the most breathtaking mountain views along the route.
Along the way, you'll be treated to spectacular panoramas of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, and the unmistakable, soaring peak of Ama Dablam, unforgettable scenery that defines the experience of an Everest trek.
The trail gradually leads you down to the valley floor, where you'll stop for lunch beside the Dudhkoshi River at an altitude of 3,250m. This is a perfect place to pause and take in the incredible surroundings, with a particularly close-up view of Thamserku dominating the landscape as you continue your journey towards Mount Everest Base Camp.
After lunch, you’ll tackle the steady zig-zagging climb up to Tengboche. Though the ascent takes 2–3 hours, the effort is well worth it as you reach the iconic Tengboche Monastery, one of the most spiritual and scenic highlights on the trek to Everest Base Camp.
You’ll spend the night in a lodge either in Tengboche itself or just below in the peaceful village of Deboche, resting before continuing your Everest Base Camp adventure.
**Altitude:** 3,867m (12,684 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 7 Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche
Your day begins with a steady descent through beautiful, lush woodland before continuing your Everest Base Camp trek, leading to a dramatic suspension bridge crossing high above the river.
After crossing, the trail gradually winds its way up the valley, offering a steady 2–3-hour climb, bringing you to the picturesque village of Pangboche (3,985m), rich in Sherpa culture and tradition. Take time to explore the ancient Chortens and intricately carved Mani walls that line the village — an authentic cultural highlight of any Everest trek.
The views of Ama Dablam along this section are truly unforgettable, offering some of the most striking close-up perspectives of this iconic Himalayan peak as you continue your journey towards Mount Everest Base Camp. After lunch, you’ll continue your ascent, following the trail into the stunning Imja Valley.
The final stretch is the steepest climb of the day, but your efforts are rewarded as you arrive at Dingboche, where you'll settle into your lodge for the night, surrounded by towering Himalayan giants and preparing for the next stage of your trek to Everest Base Camp.
**Altitude:** 4,410m (14,470 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 8 Second Acclimatisation Day in Dingboche
After a hearty breakfast, today is all about active acclimatisation as you continue your Everest Base Camp trek, setting off on a hike up neighbouring Nangkarstshang Peak, which towers above Dingboche.
This steady climb offers incredible views and plays a vital role in helping your body adjust safely to the increasing altitude — an essential part of success on the trek to Everest Base Camp.
If the weather is clear and the group is feeling strong, today also presents the exciting opportunity to reach the 5,000m mark for the first time on the trek, a huge psychological milestone and excellent preparation for the higher elevations ahead.
As you ascend, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the Himalayas, including the striking Ama Dablam, towering Lhotse, and the vast Imja Khola Valley stretching below.
After soaking in the views and completing this important acclimatisation hike, you’ll descend back to Dingboche for a well-earned rest at your lodge, ready to continue your journey towards Mount Everest Base Camp.
**Altitude:** 4,410m (14,470 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 9 Trek to Lobuche
Today’s trek begins with a steady ascent through the dramatic Khumbu Khola Valley as your Everest Base Camp trek pushes into the higher Himalayas, surrounded by towering mountain giants.
To your left, the striking peaks of Cholatse and Taboche dominate the skyline for much of the morning, creating an unforgettable backdrop along this stage of the Everest trek. As you follow the winding trail, you’ll catch glimpses of the serene, glacial waters of Chola Lake, while the mighty Mt. Pumori (7,161m) begins to appear in the distance — a powerful reminder of your growing proximity to Mount Everest Base Camp.
After crossing a glacial-fed river, you’ll pause for lunch in the tiny, rugged settlement of Dughla. Refuel here, as the most challenging part of the day awaits: the climb to the memorial hill. This poignant site, scattered with cairns and monuments, honours Sherpas and climbers who have lost their lives on Everest and the surrounding peaks, offering a humbling and reflective moment during your trek to Everest Base Camp.
From here, you’ll continue your ascent into the upper Khumbu Valley, eventually reaching the high-altitude village of Lobuche, where you'll settle in for the night. You’re one step closer to Everest Base Camp.
**Altitude:** 4,940m (16.210 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 10 Trek to Gorak Shep - Everest Base Camp - Gorak Shep
Today is the day you’ve been working towards: reaching Everest Base Camp at the culmination of your incredible trek.
This is one of the most demanding yet rewarding sections of the journey as you ascend above 5,000m, trekking deep into the heart of the Khumbu region on your trek to Everest Base Camp. An early start is essential, so bundle up. The crisp mountain air bites at first light, and temperatures can be well below freezing.
The trail leads you across rugged glacial moraine, gradually gaining altitude as you push towards Gorak Shep, the highest settlement on the Everest route. Here, you'll pause for a well-earned rest, refill your water bottles, and fuel up with lunch before continuing towards Mount Everest Base Camp.
From Gorak Shep, towering Himalayan giants surround you. The sharp peak of Mt. Pumori, along with Mahalangur, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Nuptse and more, comes into view as anticipation builds during this defining stage of your Everest trek.
Finally, you’ll stand at Everest Base Camp itself, perched at 5,364m (17,598ft). A monumental achievement and unforgettable highlight of your Everest Base Camp adventure. Surrounded by soaring peaks and ancient glaciers, this is a moment of pride, celebration and awe that few experiences on Earth can match.
After soaking it all in, capturing those iconic Everest Base Camp photos, and celebrating with your team, you’ll retrace your steps back to Gorak Shep for the night (5,164m/16,942ft), tired but exhilarated, knowing you’ve completed one of the world’s greatest trekking challenges.
**Altitude:** 5,364m (17,598 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 11 Hike to Kala Patthar – Descend to Pheriche
For those feeling strong, the day begins with an optional but unforgettable sunrise hike to Kala Patthar (5,550m), one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Everest Base Camp trek.
It’s an early start, around 4:00am, but the effort is rewarded with one of the most iconic panoramas in the Himalayas. After a challenging two-hour uphill climb, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views as the first light of day illuminates Mt. Everest and the surrounding peaks of the Khumbu — offering some of the finest views overlooking Mount Everest Base Camp.
For many trekkers, this becomes the defining moment of their entire Everest trek, creating memories that last a lifetime.
After soaking in the views, you’ll descend back to Gorak Shep and regroup with those who opted for a slower start to the morning. From here, your return journey down the Khumbu Valley begins as you make your way toward Pheriche, marking the start of the descent following your successful trek to Everest Base Camp.
With every step, you’ll notice the welcome increase in oxygen levels as you lose altitude, making the hiking feel progressively easier as your Everest Base Camp adventure continues back through the Himalayas.
**Altitude:** 5,550m (18,204 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 12 Trek to Namche Bazaar
Today’s trek begins with a steady walk along a relatively gentle trail as you continue the descent following your successful Everest Base Camp trek, winding your way back toward Tengboche.
Before reaching the village, there’s a short but scenic climb through beautiful rhododendron forests — a peaceful stretch where, if you're lucky, the vibrant blooms will still be on display, adding a splash of colour to the landscape during your return through the Khumbu Valley on this unforgettable Everest trek.
Once in Tengboche, you may have time to revisit the famous monastery or simply enjoy a relaxing tea break with Everest and Ama Dablam watching over you, one of the most picturesque viewpoints along the trek to Everest Base Camp route. From there, it’s a steep descent down to the Dudh Koshi River, followed by an undulating stretch back to Namche Bazaar.
Once back in Namche, you can enjoy the comforts of hot showers, cosy lodges, and maybe even toast your achievements with a Guinness at the world’s highest Irish bar — a well-earned celebration after completing your Everest Base Camp adventure in the high Himalayas.
**Altitude:** 3,440m (11,283 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 13 Trek to Lukla (The Final Day of your Everest Base Camp Trek)
Today marks your final day on the trail as you complete your unforgettable Everest Base Camp trek, making the full journey from Namche Bazaar back to Lukla.
You’ll head from Namche Bazaar to Lukla, retracing your steps across the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge and through charming Sherpa villages along the Everest trek route. Stop for lunch in Phakding before enjoying the final stretch through forests, prayer stones, and fluttering prayer flags that have accompanied you throughout your trek to Everest Base Camp.
Once you reach Lukla, pass through the trekking gate and celebrate alongside your guides and porters. Take this well-earned moment to reflect on your incredible journey to Mount Everest Base Camp and the achievement of completing one of the world’s most iconic trekking adventures.
**Altitude:** 2,652m (8,700 ft)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Everest Region Tea Houses
Day 14 Fly to Ramechhap - Kathamandu
Today marks your final morning in the Khumbu region following your successful Everest Base Camp trek. After saying farewell to your porters at Lukla Airport, you'll board an early flight, soaking in your last aerial views of the Himalayas and the incredible landscapes experienced throughout your Everest trek.
Upon landing (most likely in Ramechhap), you’ll transfer back to the city. If your flight arrives in Ramechhap, you can expect a scenic but bumpy 5–7-hour drive to your hotel, with breaks along the way to stretch and rest after your trek to Everest Base Camp.
In the evening, we'll regroup for a celebratory dinner to reflect on your journey to Mount Everest Base Camp, share memories from the adventure, and gather feedback before your final overnight stay at a comfortable hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 15 Farewell from Nepal
Day 15 marks the final day of your adventure with EverTrek following your unforgettable Everest Base Camp trek.
There is no strict rule on departure time. However, we recommend booking an early afternoon flight where possible. This allows for a relaxed morning, time to enjoy breakfast at the hotel and avoids rushing on your final day in Nepal after completing your trek to Everest Base Camp.
Flights to and from Lukla operate weather permitting, and delays can happen. For this reason, we strongly recommend adding an extra night in Kathmandu at the end of your trip. The approximate cost is \$90 USD, paid directly to the hotel. This provides flexibility if flights are affected. If it is not needed, you gain an extra day and night to explore the city at your own pace following your Everest Base Camp adventure.
If you have an early international flight, one of our team members will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport in good time for departure. If you are flying later in the day, you are free to explore Kathmandu’s bustling markets, pick up last-minute souvenirs, or simply relax before your transfer.
If you have extended your stay and arranged extra nights through us, you can remain at the hotel until your departure day and still enjoy our airport transfer service. Alternatively, if you have booked an add-on adventure such as the Chitwan National Park Safari, your onward journey begins today.
Meals included: Breakfast

Food &Accommodation
### Food & Accommodation

The accommodation on the Everest Base Camp trek route is basic but it’s all part of the adventure! You’ll be pleased to know that both before and after your trek, you’ll unwind in 5-star accommodation - giving you the perfect chance to relax and recharge in luxury.
**What to keep in mind -**
- Be Prepared for Basic Living: While the tea houses are cozy, they are not 5-star hotels. The focus is on providing a safe and warm place to rest rather than luxury.
- Bring Essentials: A good sleeping bag, earplugs, and a power bank can make your stay more comfortable.
- Enjoy the Experience: The simplicity of the accommodation is part of the charm of trekking in such a remote and stunning region.
### Types of Accommodation
***
##### 5\* Accommodation before & after the trek:
- The Hotel: Before and after the trek relax in comfort and style at the 5\* Hotel Aloft in the heart of Thamel or equivalent.
- Food: Aloft has a few restaurants such as the W XYZ Bar and Nook restaurant or head out into Kathmandu and try one of the local restaurants
- Relax: Swimming pool and a gym and even an onsite spa to chill out and relax after your trek
- Shop: Aloft is atop a shopping complex, where you can rent or buy any equipment prior to the trek, along with any souvenirs before you return home
##### Tea Houses and Lodges:

- These are the primary types of accommodation along the EBC route. They are simple, family-run establishments that provide a place to rest after a long day of trekking.
- Rooms are typically twin-sharing with two single beds, a mattress, pillow, and blanket. However, it’s essential to have a sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially at higher altitudes. Sleeping bags can be rented for free - please contact us for more details.
##### Facilities:
- Bathrooms: Communal bathrooms are the norm - some tea houses have attached bathrooms. Running water can be limited, especially in places like Gorak Shep.
- Showers: Hot showers are available at lower altitudes, but they come at an extra cost (around ÂŁ3-ÂŁ5). At higher altitudes, showers are less common, and many trekkers opt for wet wipes instead.
- Electricity and WiFi: Electricity is available for charging devices (weather dependent), but it’s not free and can get pricier as you ascend. WiFi is also available in some tea houses, but it’s often slow and comes with a fee.
***
#### Accommodation Summary
| | | |
|---|---|---|
| Night | Location | Type |
| 1-2 | Kathmandu | Hotel (private, en-suite) |
| 3-13 | Trekking route | Tea house/lodge |
| 14 | Kathmandu | Hotel (private, en-suite) |
All accommodation is based on shared twin rooms unless a single supplement is arranged ahead of time.
### Food
The food on the Everest Base Camp trek is surprisingly diverse and delicious, catering to both local and Western tastes. You’ll find a mix of hearty local dishes and familiar comfort foods to keep you energised for the trek.
##### Local Delights:

- Dal Bhat: A staple Nepali dish consisting of boiled rice, lentil soup, and side dishes like vegetables and curry. It’s a favorite among trekkers because it’s filling, nutritious, and often comes with unlimited refills\!
- Sherpa Stew: A warm, hearty soup with vegetables, noodles, and sometimes meat, although we advise a vegetarian diet whilst on trek to avoid food poisoning which is very common to get from meat up in the mountains.
- Veggie Momos: Our favourite - Nepali dumplings filled with vegetables, served steamed or fried.
- Garlic Soup: Not only tasty but also believed to help with acclimatisation and prevent altitude sickness.
##### Western Options:
- Pizzas and Pasta: Yes, you can find these on the trail! They might not be gourmet, but they’re comforting after a long day.
- Sandwiches and Soups: Light and easy options for lunch.
- Macaroni Dishes: A simple yet satisfying choice.
- Chips and Fried Rice: Great for a quick carb boost.
##### Breakfast:
- Tibetan bread with jam, pancakes, porridge, eggs (boiled, fried, or scrambled), and hot drinks like tea or coffee are common breakfast options.
##### Snacks:
- You can also find snacks like chocolate bars, biscuits, and energy bars at tea houses or bring your own for the trek.
### **Where Can You Get Food on the Everest Base Camp Trail?**
The tea houses and lodges along the Everest Base Camp route offer menus with these options, and the quality is generally good. Meals are freshly prepared, and the guides will help you place your orders, especially during busy seasons. The dining areas often have a cosy atmosphere with a hot stove, making it a great place to relax and socialise.
### **Can You Drink Tap Water on the EBC Trek?**
It is not recommended to drink tap water while on the EBC trek. All tap water should be treated before drinking. This is because waterborne diseases are a concern in the Himalayan region of Nepal. There is also bottled water available across the trek.
#### **How We Make Water Safer For Our Trekkers**
In March 2019, we became the first UK high-altitude trekking company to introduce purified water filters across all of our Nepal treks, reducing reliance on single-use plastic bottles and providing clean, great-tasting water without chemicals.
Previously, trekkers depended on bottled water or purification tablets — neither of which was sustainable or ideal. With each trekker potentially using over 50 plastic bottles per trip, the impact added up fast.
In our first season, this initiative prevented the use of around 16,500 one-litre plastic bottles in the Everest region — the equivalent height of five Ben Nevis mountains stacked! While filtered water isn’t possible in every location due to limited water sources, we use the system wherever conditions allow, as part of our ongoing commitment to responsible and sustainable trekking.
In areas with limited water sources, there will be opportunities to buy bottled water.

#### Challenging
### How challenging is the trek?
Everest Base Camp is one of the most famous trekking adventures in the world, taking you through Nepal’s Khumbu region to 5,364m at the foot of Mount Everest. Along the way, you pass through Sherpa villages, cross suspension bridges, and follow mountain trails surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the Himalayas.
While it is not a technical climb and does not require ropes, crampons, or mountaineering experience, it is still a high-altitude trek that demands real respect. More than just a route to a famous destination, the Everest Base Camp trek is an immersive journey through mountain landscapes, local culture, and one of the most iconic regions in all of adventure travel.
For many trekkers, reaching Everest Base Camp is a genuine bucket-list moment and an experience that stays with them for life.

## What Can You Expect On The Everest Base Camp Trek
**Altitude Challenges:**
**Duration:**
The trek typically lasts around 11 days, with 8 days ascending and 3 days descending, although in reality the trail is up and down from start to finish.
You’ll usually be trekking for 5-8 hours per day at a steady pace, with some longer or more challenging days as you reach higher altitudes.
**Terrain:**
The route to Everest Base Camp is varied but you can expect:
\- Steep ascents and descents throughout the trek.
\- Rocky and uneven mountain paths.
\- Glacial terrain as you approach Base Camp.
\- Suspension bridges crossing deep valleys and rivers.
The trek isn’t technical, but the combination of altitude, distance and terrain makes it rewarding.
**Weather:**
Temperatures can drop well below zero, especially at night, so you’ll need to be prepared for cold conditions.

Payment for your internal flight is due no later than 30 days before your trip start date. The payment link will be sent to you by our trusted partner, 2-3 months before your trip start date to pay.
Once payment is made, you'll receive a receipt confirming it’s been received. There’s nothing else you need to do - it’s a simple, stress-free process handled by the same team supporting your trek on the ground.
Is the internal flight refundable if I cancel my trip?
Refunds for internal flights are handled by our local partner, as the flight is booked directly through them and not included in your EverTrek package.
If you cancel your EverTrek trip more than 90 days before your departure, no internal flight payment will have been collected, and no action is required.
If you cancel after payment has been made, and this is within 90 days of your departure, the internal flight payment is non-refundable, as tickets will have already been issued and are non-transferable.
What happens with my internal flights if I need to reschedule?
If you need to change your trip dates, we’ll notify our local partner on your behalf after our agreement to a trip reschedule .
- Changes made 91+ days before departure can usually be accommodated at no extra cost.
- Changes within 90 days are reviewed case-by-case by our partner and may incur additional charges depending on airline policies.
What Happens if My Lukla Flight is Delayed?
Weather-related delays are common and entirely possible in the Himalayas.
With this in mind, booking through our local partner means you can benefit from rapid rebooking, on-the-ground support, and organised transfers.
***We also strongly recommend adding an extra night in Kathmandu at the end of your trip to allow for flexibility.***

Are international flights to Nepal included in the trip?
[International flights](https://evertrek.co.uk/knowledge-centre/how-do-i-book-flights-for-my-trip) are not included as part of the trip - this means you have more flexibility to find the best prices and also extend your trip should you want to explore further.
Can I still get to Nepal despite the current airspace disruption?
Yes - travellers are still getting to Nepal via alternative routes, including Istanbul, Mumbai, Delhi and Bangkok. While our trips are land-only, our friendly team are happy to help you explore the best route options. Give us a call on +44 02920 003 216.

| Readable Markdown | ### How Hard Is It to Climb to Everest Base Camp?
While you won’t need technical climbing skills, trekking to Everest Base Camp still requires a good level of physical fitness and mental resilience. The route to Everest Base Camp involves long trekking days and sustained altitude gain, making the experience physically demanding.
With proper preparation, [training](https://evertrek.co.uk/knowledge-centre/how-to-train-for-the-everest-base-camp-trek), and acclimatisation days (Days 5 and 8 in your EverTrek itinerary), the EBC trek is very achievable for most explorers.
#### **You’re Ready for the Everest Base Camp Trek if You Can Do These 3 Things**
1. You can hike for **4-6 hours** with a backpack weighing around **6-8kg**.
2. You can hike uphill and downhill sections with a total **elevation gain of 500-800m** without feeling completely drained.
3. You can do **back-to-back hikes** over the weekend to mimic the multi-day nature of the trek.
**For information, take a look at what High Altitude Personal Trainer, Adam Gawley, has to say about [his EBC trek training](https://evertrek.co.uk/knowledge-centre/training-for-everest-base-camp).**

## What Can You Expect On The Everest Base Camp Trek
**Altitude Challenges:**
