Kim Je-deok of South Korea celebrates his win over Yuki Kawata of Japan in the round of 16 in the men's recurve individual event at the World Archery Championships at the May 18 Democracy Plaza in Gwangju, 270 kilometers south of Seoul, on Sept. 11, 2025. (Yonhap) In the quarterfinals scheduled for later Thursday, Kim will face Tang Chih-Chun of Chinese Taipei. Lee, though, lost to Matias Grande of Mexico by 6-2 (29-28, 27-29, 28-27, 29-26) in the round of 16. In individual recurve matches, archers each take three arrows per set, for a maximum score of 30 points. A set win is worth two points, and a tie is good for one point. The first archer to score six points is the winner. The quarterfinals, the semifinals, the bronze medal match and the gold medal match will also be contested Thursday afternoon. Kim and Lee had combined for the men's team gold medal in Gwangju, alongside teammate Kim Woo-jin, on Wednesday. Kim Woo-jin, world No. 2 and the 2021 world individual champion, was eliminated in the round of 32 in the individual event Wednesday. Lee's exit Thursday has left Kim Je-deok as the only South Korean remaining in the men's competition. Kim, 21, will pursue his first individual medal at a major international competition. He has won three Olympic gold medals and three world titles in team events only. Also Thursday, three South Korean women, An San, Kang Chae-young and Lim Si-hyeon, all won their early knockout matches to reach the round of 16, scheduled for Friday.
