The Social Reckoning
is an upcoming American
biographical drama film
written and directed by
Aaron Sorkin
. It is a
companion piece
to
The Social Network
(2010) and is based on the events surrounding the
2021 Facebook leak
by
whistleblower
Frances Haugen
, which was covered in
The Wall Street Journal
's article series and eight-part podcast
The Facebook Files
(2021). The film will star
Mikey Madison
,
Jeremy Strong
,
Jeremy Allen White
,
Bill Burr
,
Wunmi Mosaku
,
Billy Magnussen
, and
Betty Gilpin
.
Sorkin had previously expressed interest and willingness to write a sequel to
The Social Network
should it involve the film's director
David Fincher
on numerous occasions since its original release. A follow-up to the film entered development in June 2025 with Sorkin attached as both writer and director. Sorkin also produced alongside
Todd Black
,
Peter Rice
and
Stuart M. Besser
. Casting for the film's
ensemble
was also underway that same month. Principal photography began in October 2025 in
Vancouver
, before wrapping that December.
The Social Reckoning
is scheduled to be released on October 9, 2026, by

In January 2019,
Aaron Sorkin
, the screenwriter of
The Social Network
(2010), revealed that producer
Scott Rudin
has suggested the development of a screenplay for a sequel, noting, "A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends."
[
1
]
Sorkin also mentioned that there was indeed enough material to create a sequel.
[
2
]
On July 18, 2019,
Jesse Eisenberg
, who starred as
Facebook
co-founder and CEO
Mark Zuckerberg
, expressed his interests in starring in the proposed sequel, stating that "Sorkin is a genius, and if he chooses to write about something, I'll obviously be interested".
[
3
]
In October 2020, a decade after the film's release, Sorkin announced that he would only write the sequel's script if
The Social Network
's
David Fincher
returned as director.
[
4
]
In 2023, Fincher told
The Guardian
that he and Sorkin have discussed a sequel, but said "that's a can of worms."
[
5
]
In April 2024, Sorkin said he had been working on the script for a new Facebook movie tied to the
January 6 United States Capitol attack
.
[
6
]
Announced with the title
The Social Network Part II
, the film was reported to have entered development in June 2025, with Sorkin attached as both writer and director, with the story focusing on the
2021 Facebook leak
by
whistleblower
Frances Haugen
as reported by Jeff Horwitz in
The Facebook Files
for
The Wall Street Journal
.
[
7
]
Sorkin will produce the film alongside
Todd Black
and
Stuart M. Besser
, after collaborating on his last two films,
The Trial of the Chicago 7
(2020) and
Being the Ricardos
(2022), as director.
[
7
]
The film's title was changed to
The Social Reckoning
in September 2025.
[
8
]
Casting for the film's
ensemble
was underway by June 2025, with the film seen as a vehicle for many rising stars given the previous film's status as a
breakthrough
for both Eisenberg and
Andrew Garfield
, who respectively portrayed
Zuckerberg
and
Eduardo Saverin
.
[
7
]
It remained unknown if Eisenberg would reprise the role.
[
9
]
In July 2025, it was announced that
Mikey Madison
,
Jeremy Allen White
, and
Jeremy Strong
were being considered for roles in the film.
[
10
]
[
11
]
In September 2025,
The Hollywood Reporter
reported that
Bill Burr
joined the cast as an unknown character in the film,
[
12
]
with Strong, Madison, and White confirmed for the cast, with Strong replacing Eisenberg.
[
13
]
Eisenberg passed on reprising the role of Zuckerberg for the film, having felt, among other reasons, that he had outgrown it.
[
14
]
The following day, Garfield confirmed he wouldn't reprise his role as Saverin in the film either, citing how the real-life Saverin is currently living in
Singapore
to explain his absence from the film's plot, but expressed his interest in the project.
[
15
]
Additional castings including
Wunmi Mosaku
,
Billy Magnussen
,
Betty Gilpin
,
Gbenga Akinnagbe
,
Tehmina Sunny
and
Portia Doubleday
were announced throughout October.
[

]
[
18
]
[
19
]
Principal photography
began in
Vancouver
on October 22, 2025, and
wrapped
on December 9, under the working title
Goliath
.
[
20
]
[
21
]
[
22
]
Jeff Cronenweth
serves as cinematographer for the film.
[
23
]
Alexandre Desplat
was confirmed in March 2026 to provide the film's musical score, replacing
Trent Reznor
and
Atticus Ross
from the previous film. This will be the first film directed by Aaron Sorkin not to be scored by
Daniel Pemberton
.

## Production
\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Social_Reckoning&action=edit§ion=2 "Edit section: Production")\]
### Development
\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Social_Reckoning&action=edit§ion=3 "Edit section: Development")\]
In January 2019, [Aaron Sorkin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Sorkin "Aaron Sorkin"), the screenwriter of *[The Social Network](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Network "The Social Network")* (2010), revealed that producer [Scott Rudin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Rudin "Scott Rudin") has suggested the development of a screenplay for a sequel, noting, "A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends."[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-1) Sorkin also mentioned that there was indeed enough material to create a sequel.[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-2) On July 18, 2019, [Jesse Eisenberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Eisenberg "Jesse Eisenberg"), who starred as [Facebook](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook "Facebook") co-founder and CEO [Mark Zuckerberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Zuckerberg "Mark Zuckerberg"), expressed his interests in starring in the proposed sequel, stating that "Sorkin is a genius, and if he chooses to write about something, I'll obviously be interested".[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-3) In October 2020, a decade after the film's release, Sorkin announced that he would only write the sequel's script if *The Social Network*'s [David Fincher](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Fincher "David Fincher") returned as director.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-:0-4) In 2023, Fincher told *[The Guardian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guardian "The Guardian")* that he and Sorkin have discussed a sequel, but said "that's a can of worms."[\[5\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-5) In April 2024, Sorkin said he had been working on the script for a new Facebook movie tied to the [January 6 United States Capitol attack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6_United_States_Capitol_attack "January 6 United States Capitol attack").[\[6\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-6)
Announced with the title *The Social Network Part II*, the film was reported to have entered development in June 2025, with Sorkin attached as both writer and director, with the story focusing on the [2021 Facebook leak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Facebook_leak "2021 Facebook leak") by [whistleblower](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistleblower "Whistleblower") [Frances Haugen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Haugen "Frances Haugen") as reported by Jeff Horwitz in *The Facebook Files* for *[The Wall Street Journal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wall_Street_Journal "The Wall Street Journal")*.[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-PartII-7) Sorkin will produce the film alongside [Todd Black](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Black "Todd Black") and [Stuart M. Besser](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_M._Besser "Stuart M. Besser"), after collaborating on his last two films, *[The Trial of the Chicago 7](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trial_of_the_Chicago_7 "The Trial of the Chicago 7")* (2020) and *[Being the Ricardos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Being_the_Ricardos "Being the Ricardos")* (2022), as director.[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-PartII-7) The film's title was changed to *The Social Reckoning* in September 2025.[\[8\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-8)
### Casting
\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Social_Reckoning&action=edit§ion=4 "Edit section: Casting")\]
Casting for the film's [ensemble](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ensemble_cast "Ensemble cast") was underway by June 2025, with the film seen as a vehicle for many rising stars given the previous film's status as a [breakthrough](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakthrough_role "Breakthrough role") for both Eisenberg and [Andrew Garfield](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Garfield "Andrew Garfield"), who respectively portrayed [Zuckerberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuckerberg "Zuckerberg") and [Eduardo Saverin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardo_Saverin "Eduardo Saverin").[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-PartII-7) It remained unknown if Eisenberg would reprise the role.[\[9\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-9) In July 2025, it was announced that [Mikey Madison](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikey_Madison "Mikey Madison"), [Jeremy Allen White](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Allen_White "Jeremy Allen White"), and [Jeremy Strong](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Strong "Jeremy Strong") were being considered for roles in the film.[\[10\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-10)[\[11\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-11)
In September 2025, *[The Hollywood Reporter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hollywood_Reporter "The Hollywood Reporter")* reported that [Bill Burr](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Burr "Bill Burr") joined the cast as an unknown character in the film,[\[12\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-12) with Strong, Madison, and White confirmed for the cast, with Strong replacing Eisenberg.[\[13\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-13) Eisenberg passed on reprising the role of Zuckerberg for the film, having felt, among other reasons, that he had outgrown it.[\[14\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-14) The following day, Garfield confirmed he wouldn't reprise his role as Saverin in the film either, citing how the real-life Saverin is currently living in [Singapore](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore "Singapore") to explain his absence from the film's plot, but expressed his interest in the project.[\[15\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-15) Additional castings including [Wunmi Mosaku](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wunmi_Mosaku "Wunmi Mosaku"), [Billy Magnussen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Magnussen "Billy Magnussen"), [Betty Gilpin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Gilpin "Betty Gilpin"), [Gbenga Akinnagbe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gbenga_Akinnagbe "Gbenga Akinnagbe"), [Tehmina Sunny](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehmina_Sunny "Tehmina Sunny") and [Portia Doubleday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portia_Doubleday "Portia Doubleday") were announced throughout October.[\[16\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-16)[\[17\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-17)[\[18\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-18)[\[19\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-19)
### Filming
\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Social_Reckoning&action=edit§ion=5 "Edit section: Filming")\]
[Principal photography](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principal_photography "Principal photography") began in [Vancouver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver "Vancouver") on October 22, 2025, and [wrapped](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrap_\(filmmaking\) "Wrap (filmmaking)") on December 9, under the working title *Goliath*.[\[20\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-20)[\[21\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-21)[\[22\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-22) [Jeff Cronenweth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Cronenweth "Jeff Cronenweth") serves as cinematographer for the film.[\[23\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-23)

This will be the first film directed by Aaron Sorkin not to be scored by [Daniel Pemberton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Pemberton "Daniel Pemberton").[\[24\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-24)

***The Social Reckoning*** is an upcoming American [biographical drama film](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biographical_drama_film "Biographical drama film") written and directed by [Aaron Sorkin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Sorkin "Aaron Sorkin"). It is a [companion piece](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Companion_piece "Companion piece") to *[The Social Network](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Network "The Social Network")* (2010) and is based on the events surrounding the [2021 Facebook leak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Facebook_leak "2021 Facebook leak") by [whistleblower](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistleblowing "Whistleblowing") [Frances Haugen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Haugen "Frances Haugen"), which was covered in *[The Wall Street Journal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wall_Street_Journal "The Wall Street Journal")*'s article series and eight-part podcast *The Facebook Files* (2021). The film will star [Mikey Madison](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikey_Madison "Mikey Madison"), [Jeremy Strong](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Strong "Jeremy Strong"), [Jeremy Allen White](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Allen_White "Jeremy Allen White"), [Bill Burr](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Burr "Bill Burr"), [Wunmi Mosaku](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wunmi_Mosaku "Wunmi Mosaku"), [Billy Magnussen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Magnussen "Billy Magnussen"), and [Betty Gilpin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Gilpin "Betty Gilpin").
Sorkin had previously expressed interest and willingness to write a sequel to *The Social Network* should it involve the film's director [David Fincher](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Fincher "David Fincher") on numerous occasions since its original release. A follow-up to the film entered development in June 2025 with Sorkin attached as both writer and director. Sorkin also produced alongside [Todd Black](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Black "Todd Black"), [Peter Rice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Rice_\(executive\) "Peter Rice (executive)") and [Stuart M. Besser](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_M._Besser "Stuart M. Besser"). Casting for the film's [ensemble](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ensemble_cast "Ensemble cast") was also underway that same month. Principal photography began in October 2025 in [Vancouver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver "Vancouver"), before wrapping that December.
*The Social Reckoning* is scheduled to be released on October 9, 2026, by [Sony Pictures Releasing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Pictures_Releasing "Sony Pictures Releasing").

Casting for the film's [ensemble](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ensemble_cast "Ensemble cast") was underway by June 2025, with the film seen as a vehicle for many rising stars given the previous film's status as a [breakthrough](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakthrough_role "Breakthrough role") for both Eisenberg and [Andrew Garfield](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Garfield "Andrew Garfield"), who respectively portrayed [Zuckerberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuckerberg "Zuckerberg") and [Eduardo Saverin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardo_Saverin "Eduardo Saverin").[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-PartII-7) It remained unknown if Eisenberg would reprise the role.[\[9\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-9) In July 2025, it was announced that [Mikey Madison](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikey_Madison "Mikey Madison"), [Jeremy Allen White](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Allen_White "Jeremy Allen White"), and [Jeremy Strong](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Strong "Jeremy Strong") were being considered for roles in the film.[\[10\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-10)[\[11\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-11)
In September 2025, *[The Hollywood Reporter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hollywood_Reporter "The Hollywood Reporter")* reported that [Bill Burr](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Burr "Bill Burr") joined the cast as an unknown character in the film,[\[12\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-12) with Strong, Madison, and White confirmed for the cast, with Strong replacing Eisenberg.[\[13\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-13) Eisenberg passed on reprising the role of Zuckerberg for the film, having felt, among other reasons, that he had outgrown it.[\[14\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-14) The following day, Garfield confirmed he wouldn't reprise his role as Saverin in the film either, citing how the real-life Saverin is currently living in [Singapore](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore "Singapore") to explain his absence from the film's plot, but expressed his interest in the project.[\[15\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-15) Additional castings including [Wunmi Mosaku](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wunmi_Mosaku "Wunmi Mosaku"), [Billy Magnussen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Magnussen "Billy Magnussen"), [Betty Gilpin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Gilpin "Betty Gilpin"), [Gbenga Akinnagbe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gbenga_Akinnagbe "Gbenga Akinnagbe"), [Tehmina Sunny](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehmina_Sunny "Tehmina Sunny") and [Portia Doubleday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portia_Doubleday "Portia Doubleday") were announced throughout October.[\[16\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-16)[\[17\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-17)[\[18\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-18)[\[19\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-19)
[Principal photography](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principal_photography "Principal photography") began in [Vancouver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver "Vancouver") on October 22, 2025, and [wrapped](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrap_\(filmmaking\) "Wrap (filmmaking)") on December 9, under the working title *Goliath*.[\[20\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-20)[\[21\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-21)[\[22\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-22) [Jeff Cronenweth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Cronenweth "Jeff Cronenweth") serves as cinematographer for the film.[\[23\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-23)
[Alexandre Desplat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandre_Desplat "Alexandre Desplat") was confirmed in March 2026 to provide the film's musical score, replacing [Trent Reznor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trent_Reznor "Trent Reznor") and [Atticus Ross](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atticus_Ross "Atticus Ross") from the previous film.
*The Social Reckoning* is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 9, 2026, by [Sony Pictures Releasing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Pictures_Releasing "Sony Pictures Releasing").[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-PartII-7)[\[25\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Reckoning#cite_note-25)
