Boilerpipe Text	From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In many countries of South Asia and South East Asia, the traditional new year is calculated on the sun's entry into the constellation Aries as per the regional Hindu calendars or Buddhist calendars . This event is known by a variety of names in different nations, including Sankranti in India, Pohela Boishakh in Bangladesh, Songkran in Thailand, Aluth Avurudda or Puthandu in Sri Lanka, and Thingyan in Myanmar. [ 1 ] In modern times, it is usually reckoned around 14 April. As most countries and cultures of South and Southeast Asia lie within the Indian cultural sphere , the development of their traditional calendars has been strongly influenced by the Hindu calendar . As in many other calendars, the New Year was based on the northern hemisphere vernal equinox (the beginning of spring). However, the Hindu calendar year was based on the Nirayana or sidereal year (i.e. the movement of the sun relative to the stars), while the Western Gregorian calendar is based on the tropical year (the cycle of seasons). In ancient times, the sun's entry into Aries coincided with the equinox. However, due to the earth's axial precession , the sidereal year is slightly longer than the tropical year, causing the dates to gradually drift apart. Today, the sun's entry into Aries occurs around 18 April, according to astronomical definitions. [ 2 ] Some traditional calendars are still marked by the sun's actual movements while others have since been fixed to the Gregorian calendar. The sun's entry into Aries is known as meṣa saṅkrānti in Sanskrit and is observed as Mesha Sankranti in India. [ 1 ] The specific New Year observances include: In India: Navreh : Kashmir Bohag Bihu : Assam Pohela Baishakh : West Bengal , east and northeastern India. As in many other calendars, the New Year was based on the northern hemisphere [vernal equinox](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_equinox "March equinox") (the beginning of spring). This event is known by a variety of names in different nations, including [Sankranti](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesha_Sankranti "Mesha Sankranti") in India, [Pohela Boishakh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pohela_Boishakh "Pohela Boishakh") in Bangladesh, [Songkran](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songkran "Songkran") in Thailand, [Aluth Avurudda](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluth_Avurudda "Aluth Avurudda") or [Puthandu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puthandu "Puthandu") in Sri Lanka, and [Thingyan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thingyan "Thingyan") in Myanmar.[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_and_Southeast_Asian_solar_New_Year#cite_note-sewell31-1) In modern times, it is usually reckoned around 14 April. As most countries and cultures of South and Southeast Asia lie within the [Indian cultural sphere](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_India "Greater India"), the development of their traditional calendars has been strongly influenced by the [Hindu calendar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_calendar "Hindu calendar"). As in many other calendars, the New Year was based on the northern hemisphere [vernal equinox](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_equinox "March equinox") (the beginning of spring). However, the [Hindu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu "Hindu") calendar year was based on the [Nirayana](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirayana_system "Nirayana system") or [sidereal year](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidereal_year "Sidereal year") (i.e. the movement of the sun relative to the stars), while the Western [Gregorian calendar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar "Gregorian calendar") is based on the [tropical year](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_year "Tropical year") (the cycle of seasons). In ancient times, the [sun's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surya "Surya") entry into Aries coincided with the equinox. However, due to the earth's [axial precession](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axial_precession "Axial precession"), the sidereal year is slightly longer than the tropical year, causing the dates to gradually drift apart. Today, the sun's entry into Aries occurs around 18 April, according to astronomical definitions.[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_and_Southeast_Asian_solar_New_Year#cite_note-2) Some traditional calendars are still marked by the sun's actual movements while others have since been fixed to the Gregorian calendar.
