multinational conglomerate
founded by
Koo In-hwoi
in 1947 and managed by successive generations of his family. Headquartered in the LG Twin Towers building in
Yeouido-dong
,
Yeongdeungpo District
, in Seoul, it was the
sixth-largest company in South Korea
by revenue in 2023. LG develops, manufactures, and markets electronics, chemicals, household appliances, and
telecommunications
products. It operates subsidiaries in over 80 countries, including
LG Electronics
,
Zenith
,
LG Display
,
LG Uplus
,
LG Innotek
,
LG Chem
,
LG Energy Solution
, and LG AI Research.
LG Corporation was established as
Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Corp.
in 1947 by
Koo In-hwoi
.
[
4
]
Its first product was "Lucky Cream", the first Korean make-up cream.
[
5
]
In 1952, Lak Hui (
락희
) (pronounced "Lucky"; now LG Chem) became the first South Korean company to enter the
plastics industry
. As the company expanded its plastics business, it established
GoldStar
Co. Ltd. (now LG Electronics Inc.) in 1958. Both companies Lucky and GoldStar merged to form Lucky-Goldstar in 1983.
[
6
]
GoldStar produced South Korea's first
radio
.
[
6
]
Many
consumer electronics
were sold under the brand name GoldStar, while some other household products (not available outside South Korea) were sold under the brand name of Lucky. The Lucky brand was famous for hygiene products such as soaps and HiTi laundry detergents, but the brand was mostly associated with its Lucky and Perioe
toothpaste
. LG continues to manufacture some of these products for the South Korean market.
Koo In-hwoi led the corporation until his death in 1969, at which time, his son
Koo Cha-kyung
took over. In 1995, he passed the leadership to his son,
Koo Bon-moo
. Koo Bon-moo renamed the company to LG in that year.
[
6
]
The company then trademarked the letters LG with the company's tagline "Life's Good". LG has owned the
domain name
LG.com since 2009. It had operated LG.co.kr since 1997.
[
7
]
LG replaced its old logo with a new one on 30 December 2014, changing the wordmark font from
Helvetica
to LG Smart, the new custom corporate typeface of the company since 2013.
Koo Bon-moo died of a
brain tumor
on 20 May 2018.
[
8
]
In July 2018, it was announced that
Koo Kwang-mo
, the nephew and adopted son of Koo Bon-moo, will be the new CEO of LG. Koo Bon-moo adopted his nephew in 2004, after losing his only son in 1994,
[

citing "a family tradition of male-only succession".

## History
\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=LG&action=edit§ion=1 "Edit section: History")\]
LG Corporation was established as [Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Corp.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Chem "LG Chem") in 1947 by [Koo In-hwoi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koo_In-hwoi "Koo In-hwoi").[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-7) Its first product was "Lucky Cream", the first Korean make-up cream.[\[5\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-8) In 1952, Lak Hui (락희) (pronounced "Lucky"; now LG Chem) became the first South Korean company to enter the [plastics industry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastics_industry "Plastics industry"). As the company expanded its plastics business, it established [GoldStar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoldStar "GoldStar") Co. Ltd. (now LG Electronics Inc.) in 1958. Both companies Lucky and GoldStar merged to form Lucky-Goldstar in 1983.[\[6\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-Song_2017-9)
GoldStar produced South Korea's first [radio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_receiver "Radio receiver").[\[6\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-Song_2017-9) Many [consumer electronics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_electronics "Consumer electronics") were sold under the brand name GoldStar, while some other household products (not available outside South Korea) were sold under the brand name of Lucky. The Lucky brand was famous for hygiene products such as soaps and HiTi laundry detergents, but the brand was mostly associated with its Lucky and Perioe [toothpaste](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothpaste "Toothpaste"). LG continues to manufacture some of these products for the South Korean market.
Koo In-hwoi led the corporation until his death in 1969, at which time, his son [Koo Cha-kyung](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koo_Cha-kyung "Koo Cha-kyung") took over. In 1995, he passed the leadership to his son, [Koo Bon-moo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koo_Bon-moo "Koo Bon-moo"). Koo Bon-moo renamed the company to LG in that year.[\[6\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-Song_2017-9) The company then trademarked the letters LG with the company's tagline "Life's Good". LG has owned the [domain name](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name "Domain name") LG.com since 2009. It had operated LG.co.kr since 1997.[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-10)
LG replaced its old logo with a new one on 30 December 2014, changing the wordmark font from [Helvetica](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helvetica "Helvetica") to LG Smart, the new custom corporate typeface of the company since 2013.
Koo Bon-moo died of a [brain tumor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_tumor "Brain tumor") on 20 May 2018.[\[8\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-11) In July 2018, it was announced that [Koo Kwang-mo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koo_Kwang-mo "Koo Kwang-mo"), the nephew and adopted son of Koo Bon-moo, will be the new CEO of LG. Koo Bon-moo adopted his nephew in 2004, after losing his only son in 1994,[\[9\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-Kim_2018-12) citing "a family tradition of male-only succession".[\[10\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-Lee_2018-13)

**LG Corporation** (or **LG Group**),[\[b\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-5) formerly known as **Lucky Goldstar**,[\[c\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG#cite_note-6) is a South Korean [multinational conglomerate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multinational_conglomerate "Multinational conglomerate") founded by [Koo In-hwoi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koo_In-hwoi "Koo In-hwoi") in 1947 and managed by successive generations of his family. Headquartered in the LG Twin Towers building in [Yeouido-dong](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeouido-dong "Yeouido-dong"), [Yeongdeungpo District](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeongdeungpo_District "Yeongdeungpo District"), in Seoul, it was the [sixth-largest company in South Korea](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_companies_of_South_Korea "List of largest companies of South Korea") by revenue in 2023. LG develops, manufactures, and markets electronics, chemicals, household appliances, and [telecommunications](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunications "Telecommunications") products. It operates subsidiaries in over 80 countries, including [LG Electronics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Electronics "LG Electronics"), [Zenith](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zenith_Electronics "Zenith Electronics"), [LG Display](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Display "LG Display"), [LG Uplus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Uplus "LG Uplus"), [LG Innotek](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Innotek "LG Innotek"), [LG Chem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Chem "LG Chem"), [LG Energy Solution](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Energy_Solution "LG Energy Solution"), and LG AI Research.
