The
FIFA World Cup
is a golden
trophy
that is awarded to the winners of the
FIFA World Cup
association football
tournament. Since the advent of the World Cup in 1930, two different trophies have been used: the
Jules Rimet Trophy
from 1930 to 1970, and thereafter the
FIFA World Cup Trophy
from 1974 to the present day. The production cost of the current trophy is estimated at $242,700.
[
1
]
The first trophy, originally named
Victory
, but renamed in honor of
FIFA
president
Jules Rimet
, was made of gold plated
sterling silver
and a
lapis lazuli
base. It depicted
Nike
, the Greek goddess of victory.
Brazil
was awarded the trophy in perpetuity following their third title in 1970, prompting the commissioning of a replacement. The original Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in 1983 and has never been recovered.
The subsequent trophy, called the "FIFA World Cup Trophy", was introduced in
1974
. Made of 18 karat gold with bands of
malachite
on its base, it stands 36.8 centimetres (14.5 in) high and weighs 6.175 kilograms (13.61 lb).
[
2
]
The trophy was made by the
GDE Bertoni
company in Italy.
[
3
]
It depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. The current holders of the trophy are
Argentina
, winners of the
2022 World Cup
. The trophy is kept at the
FIFA World Football Museum
in Zürich, Switzerland, and leaves there only on select occasions. World Cup winners receive a gold-plated bronze replica, which they possess until the next World Cup final and in perpetuity if they have won it three times.
[
4
]
Only a selected few are officially allowed to touch the trophy with bare hands, including
players
and
managers
who have won the competition, heads of state, and FIFA officials.

. The original was stolen from Brazil in 1983 and has never been recovered.
The
Jules Rimet
Cup was the original trophy of the
FIFA World Cup
. Originally called "Victory", but generally known simply as the
World Cup
or
Coupe du Monde
, it was renamed in 1946 to honour the
FIFA President
Jules Rimet, who in 1929 passed a vote to initiate the competition. It was designed by French sculptor
Abel Lafleur
and made of gold-plated sterling silver on a
lapis lazuli
base.
[
6
]
In 1954 the base was replaced with a taller version to accommodate more winners' details. It stood 35 centimetres (14 in) high and weighed 3.8 kilograms (8.4 lb).
[
7
]
It comprised a decagonal cup, supported by a winged figure representing
Nike
, the ancient Greek goddess of victory. The Jules Rimet Trophy was taken to Uruguay for the first FIFA World Cup aboard the
Conte Verde
, which set sail from
Villefranche-sur-Mer
, just southeast of
Nice
, in June 1930. This was the same ship that carried Jules Rimet and the footballers representing France, Romania, and Belgium who were participating in the tournament that year. The first team to be awarded the trophy was
Uruguay
, the winners of the
1930 World Cup
.
[
8
]
Jules Rimet
presents the World Cup trophy to
Raúl Jude
, president of the Uruguayan Football Association, winners of the inaugural
1930 FIFA World Cup
. This trophy was renamed for Rimet in 1946.
During World War II, the trophy was held by
1938
champion
Italy
.
Ottorino Barassi
, the Italian vice-president of
FIFA
and president of
FIGC
, secretly transported the trophy from a bank in Rome and hid it in a shoe-box under his bed to prevent the
Nazis
from taking it.
[
9
]
The
1958 FIFA World Cup
in Sweden marked the beginning of a tradition regarding the trophy. As Brazilian captain
Hilderaldo Bellini
heard photographers' requests for a better view of the Jules Rimet Trophy, he lifted it up in the air. Every cup-winning captain since has repeated the gesture.
[
10
]
On 20 March 1966, four months before the
1966 FIFA World Cup
in England, the
trophy was stolen
during a public exhibition at
Westminster Central Hall
.
[
11
]
It was found seven days later wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a suburban garden hedge in Beulah Hill,
Upper Norwood
,
South London
, by a black and white collie dog named
Pickles
.
[
12
]
[
13
]
As a security measure, the (English)
Football Association
secretly manufactured a replica of the trophy for use in exhibitions rather than the original. This replica was used on occasions until the original trophy had to be handed back to FIFA for the
next competition in 1970
. Since FIFA had explicitly denied the FA permission to create a replica, the replica also had to disappear from public view and was for many years kept under its creator's bed. This replica was sold at an auction in 1997 for £254,500, when it was purchased by FIFA.
[
14
]
The high auction price, 10 times the reserve price of £20,000–30,000, was led by speculation that the auctioned trophy was not the replica trophy but the original itself. Testing by FIFA confirmed the auctioned trophy was a replica.
[
14
]
Soon afterwards FIFA arranged for the replica to be lent for display at the English
National Football Museum
, which was then based in
Preston
but is now in
Manchester
.
[
15
]
The
Brazilian team
won the tournament for the third time in 1970, allowing them to keep the real trophy in perpetuity, as had been stipulated by Jules Rimet in 1930.
[
16
]
It was put on display at the
Brazilian Football Confederation
headquarters in
Rio de Janeiro
, in a cabinet with a front of bullet-proof glass.
[
17
]
On 19 December 1983,
the trophy was stolen again
. The wooden rear of the cabinet was forced open with a crowbar and the cup was taken.
[
18
]
Four men were tried and convicted in absentia for the crime.
[
19
]
The trophy has never been recovered, and it is widely believed to have been melted down and sold into gold bars.
[
4
]
However, some believe the trophy was not melted down (as it did not actually contain enough gold to produce gold bars if melted down) and was instead sold onto the black market and may still exist.
[
20
]
Only one piece of the Jules Rimet Trophy has been found, the original base, which FIFA had kept in a basement of the federation's Zürich headquarters prior to 2015.
[
21
]
The Confederation commissioned a replica of their own, made by
Eastman Kodak
, using 1.8 kilograms (4.0 lb) of gold. This replica was presented to
Brazilian military
president
João Figueiredo
in 1984.
[
19
]
A replacement trophy was commissioned by FIFA for the
1974 World Cup
. Fifty-three submissions were received from sculptors in seven countries.
[
4
]
[
22
]
Italian artist
Silvio Gazzaniga
was awarded the commission. The trophy stands 36.5 centimetres (14.4 in) tall and is made using 5.0 kilograms (11.0 lb) of 18 karat (75%) gold, worth approximately US$407,725 as of 25-AUG-2025. Its base is 13 centimetres (5.1 in) in diameter containing two layers of
malachite
which adds another 1.175 kilograms (2.59 lb) to the total weight. Chemist
Sir Martyn Poliakoff
claims that the trophy is hollow, because if it were solid gold, the trophy would weigh 70–80 kilograms (150–180 lb) and would be too heavy to lift;
[
23
]
[
24
]
the trophy's original manufacturer has confirmed its hollowness.
[
25
]
[
26
]
Produced by
GDE Bertoni
in
Paderno Dugnano
, it depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. Gazzaniga described the trophy thus, "The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the compact body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of victory".
[
4
]
The Cup used to be kept by the winning team until the final draw of the next tournament, but that is no longer the case. Instead the winners of the tournament receive a bronze replica which is gold-plated rather than solid gold. Likewise, three-time winners keep the replica instead of the original cup.
[
4
]
Germany
became the first nation to win the new trophy for the third time when they won the
2014 FIFA World Cup
,
[
27
]
and
Argentina
became the second nation following their third win in Qatar at the
2022 FIFA World Cup
.
The trophy has the engraving "FIFA World Cup" on its base. After the
1994 FIFA World Cup
, a plate was added to the bottom side of the trophy where the names of winning countries are engraved, names therefore not visible when the trophy is standing upright. The inscriptions state the year in figures and the name of the winning nation in its national language – for example, "1974
Deutschland
"
or "1994
Brasil
"
. In 2010, the name of the winning nation was engraved as "2010 Spain" in English, not in Spanish.
[
28
]
[
29
]
This was corrected in the new plate made after the 2018 World Cup.
[
30
]
As of 2022, twelve winners have been engraved on the base. The plate is replaced each World Cup cycle and the names of the trophy winners are rearranged into a spiral to accommodate future winners.
[
4
]
The original trophy is now permanently kept at the
FIFA World Football Museum
in Zürich, Switzerland. It leaves there only when it goes on its FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour. It is present at the Final draw for the next World Cup, and on the pitch at the World Cup opening game and Final.
[
31
]
The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour was inaugurated for the
2006 FIFA World Cup
competition.
[
32
]
On 3 December 2025,
Lego
announced that a version of the FIFA World Cup Trophy would be released in March 2026 ahead of the
2026 FIFA World Cup

But the story has holes. For a start, the Rimet couldn't be melted into gold bars because it wasn't solid gold. Most likely, the German replica wasn't all gold either. Moreover, the police had no evidence the trophy had been melted down. Indeed, the convicted Argentine gold dealer Juan Carlos Hernández testified that he didn't melt it down. An analysis of his foundry found traces of gold of a different quality from the trophy.

The **FIFA World Cup** is a golden [trophy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trophy "Trophy") that is awarded to the winners of the [FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup "FIFA World Cup") [association football](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_football "Association football") tournament. Since the advent of the World Cup in 1930, two different trophies have been used: the **Jules Rimet Trophy** from 1930 to 1970, and thereafter the **FIFA World Cup Trophy** from 1974 to the present day. The production cost of the current trophy is estimated at \$242,700.[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-1)
The first trophy, originally named *Victory*, but renamed in honor of [FIFA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA "FIFA") president [Jules Rimet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Rimet "Jules Rimet"), was made of gold plated [sterling silver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_silver "Sterling silver") and a [lapis lazuli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapis_lazuli "Lapis lazuli") base. It depicted [Nike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nike_\(mythology\) "Nike (mythology)"), the Greek goddess of victory. [Brazil](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_national_football_team "Brazil national football team") was awarded the trophy in perpetuity following their third title in 1970, prompting the commissioning of a replacement. The original Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in 1983 and has never been recovered.
The subsequent trophy, called the "FIFA World Cup Trophy", was introduced in [1974](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_FIFA_World_Cup "1974 FIFA World Cup"). Made of 18 karat gold with bands of [malachite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachite "Malachite") on its base, it stands 36.8 centimetres (14.5 in) high and weighs 6.175 kilograms (13.61 lb).[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-2) The trophy was made by the [GDE Bertoni](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDE_Bertoni "GDE Bertoni") company in Italy.[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-3) It depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. The current holders of the trophy are [Argentina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina_national_football_team "Argentina national football team"), winners of the [2022 World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_FIFA_World_Cup "2022 FIFA World Cup"). The trophy is kept at the [FIFA World Football Museum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Museum "FIFA Museum") in Zürich, Switzerland, and leaves there only on select occasions. World Cup winners receive a gold-plated bronze replica, which they possess until the next World Cup final and in perpetuity if they have won it three times.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-newtrophy-4)
Only a selected few are officially allowed to touch the trophy with bare hands, including [players](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FIFA_World_Cup_winning_players "List of FIFA World Cup winning players") and [managers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FIFA_World_Cup_winning_managers "List of FIFA World Cup winning managers") who have won the competition, heads of state, and FIFA officials.[\[5\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-5)
## Jules Rimet Trophy
\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy&action=edit§ion=1 "Edit section: Jules Rimet Trophy")\]
[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jules_Rimet_trophy_replica.jpg)
Jules Rimet Trophy replica on display in the English [National Football Museum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_Museum "National Football Museum"). The original was stolen from Brazil in 1983 and has never been recovered.
The [Jules Rimet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Rimet "Jules Rimet") Cup was the original trophy of the [FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup "FIFA World Cup"). Originally called "Victory", but generally known simply as the *World Cup* or *Coupe du Monde*, it was renamed in 1946 to honour the [FIFA President](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_President "FIFA President") Jules Rimet, who in 1929 passed a vote to initiate the competition. It was designed by French sculptor [Abel Lafleur](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abel_Lafleur "Abel Lafleur") and made of gold-plated sterling silver on a [lapis lazuli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapis_lazuli "Lapis lazuli") base.[\[6\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-6) In 1954 the base was replaced with a taller version to accommodate more winners' details. It stood 35 centimetres (14 in) high and weighed 3.8 kilograms (8.4 lb).[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-7) It comprised a decagonal cup, supported by a winged figure representing [Nike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nike_\(mythology\) "Nike (mythology)"), the ancient Greek goddess of victory. The Jules Rimet Trophy was taken to Uruguay for the first FIFA World Cup aboard the *[Conte Verde](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Conte_Verde "SS Conte Verde")*, which set sail from [Villefranche-sur-Mer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villefranche-sur-Mer "Villefranche-sur-Mer"), just southeast of [Nice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nice "Nice"), in June 1930. This was the same ship that carried Jules Rimet and the footballers representing France, Romania, and Belgium who were participating in the tournament that year. The first team to be awarded the trophy was [Uruguay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uruguay_national_football_team "Uruguay national football team"), the winners of the [1930 World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930_FIFA_World_Cup "1930 FIFA World Cup").[\[8\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-8)
[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jules_Rimet_presents_1930_FIFA_Cup_to_Ra%C3%BAl_Jude_1974_stamp_of_Nicaragua.jpg)
[Jules Rimet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Rimet "Jules Rimet") presents the World Cup trophy to [Raúl Jude](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ra%C3%BAl_Jude "Raúl Jude"), president of the Uruguayan Football Association, winners of the inaugural [1930 FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930_FIFA_World_Cup "1930 FIFA World Cup"). This trophy was renamed for Rimet in 1946.
During World War II, the trophy was held by [1938](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1938_FIFA_World_Cup "1938 FIFA World Cup") champion [Italy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy_national_football_team "Italy national football team"). [Ottorino Barassi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottorino_Barassi "Ottorino Barassi"), the Italian vice-president of [FIFA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA "FIFA") and president of [FIGC](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Football_Federation "Italian Football Federation"), secretly transported the trophy from a bank in Rome and hid it in a shoe-box under his bed to prevent the [Nazis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazis "Nazis") from taking it.[\[9\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-9) The [1958 FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_FIFA_World_Cup "1958 FIFA World Cup") in Sweden marked the beginning of a tradition regarding the trophy. As Brazilian captain [Hilderaldo Bellini](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilderaldo_Bellini "Hilderaldo Bellini") heard photographers' requests for a better view of the Jules Rimet Trophy, he lifted it up in the air. Every cup-winning captain since has repeated the gesture.[\[10\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-10)
On 20 March 1966, four months before the [1966 FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_FIFA_World_Cup "1966 FIFA World Cup") in England, the [trophy was stolen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_theft_of_the_Jules_Rimet_Trophy "1966 theft of the Jules Rimet Trophy") during a public exhibition at [Westminster Central Hall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methodist_Central_Hall_Westminster "Methodist Central Hall Westminster").[\[11\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-11) It was found seven days later wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a suburban garden hedge in Beulah Hill, [Upper Norwood](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_Norwood "Upper Norwood"), [South London](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_London "South London"), by a black and white collie dog named [Pickles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickles_\(dog\) "Pickles (dog)").[\[12\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-12)[\[13\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-13)
As a security measure, the (English) [Football Association](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Football_Association "The Football Association") secretly manufactured a replica of the trophy for use in exhibitions rather than the original. This replica was used on occasions until the original trophy had to be handed back to FIFA for the [next competition in 1970](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_FIFA_World_Cup "1970 FIFA World Cup"). Since FIFA had explicitly denied the FA permission to create a replica, the replica also had to disappear from public view and was for many years kept under its creator's bed. This replica was sold at an auction in 1997 for £254,500, when it was purchased by FIFA.[\[14\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-Simon_Kuper_2006-14) The high auction price, 10 times the reserve price of £20,000–30,000, was led by speculation that the auctioned trophy was not the replica trophy but the original itself. Testing by FIFA confirmed the auctioned trophy was a replica.[\[14\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-Simon_Kuper_2006-14) Soon afterwards FIFA arranged for the replica to be lent for display at the English [National Football Museum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_Museum "National Football Museum"), which was then based in [Preston](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston,_Lancashire "Preston, Lancashire") but is now in [Manchester](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester "Manchester").[\[15\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-15)
The [Brazilian team](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_national_football_team "Brazil national football team") won the tournament for the third time in 1970, allowing them to keep the real trophy in perpetuity, as had been stipulated by Jules Rimet in 1930.[\[16\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-16) It was put on display at the [Brazilian Football Confederation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_Football_Confederation "Brazilian Football Confederation") headquarters in [Rio de Janeiro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_de_Janeiro "Rio de Janeiro"), in a cabinet with a front of bullet-proof glass.[\[17\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-17)
On 19 December 1983, [the trophy was stolen again](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_theft_of_the_Jules_Rimet_Trophy "1983 theft of the Jules Rimet Trophy"). The wooden rear of the cabinet was forced open with a crowbar and the cup was taken.[\[18\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-18) Four men were tried and convicted in absentia for the crime.[\[19\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-ap-19) The trophy has never been recovered, and it is widely believed to have been melted down and sold into gold bars.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-newtrophy-4) However, some believe the trophy was not melted down (as it did not actually contain enough gold to produce gold bars if melted down) and was instead sold onto the black market and may still exist.[\[20\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-Kuper_2012-20)
Only one piece of the Jules Rimet Trophy has been found, the original base, which FIFA had kept in a basement of the federation's Zürich headquarters prior to 2015.[\[21\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-21)
The Confederation commissioned a replica of their own, made by [Eastman Kodak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastman_Kodak "Eastman Kodak"), using 1.8 kilograms (4.0 lb) of gold. This replica was presented to [Brazilian military](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_military_dictatorship "Brazilian military dictatorship") [president](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_Brazil "President of Brazil") [João Figueiredo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jo%C3%A3o_Figueiredo "João Figueiredo") in 1984.[\[19\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-ap-19)
## New trophy

A replacement trophy was commissioned by FIFA for the [1974 World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_FIFA_World_Cup "1974 FIFA World Cup"). Fifty-three submissions were received from sculptors in seven countries.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-newtrophy-4)[\[22\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-22) Italian artist [Silvio Gazzaniga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silvio_Gazzaniga "Silvio Gazzaniga") was awarded the commission. The trophy stands 36.5 centimetres (14.4 in) tall and is made using 5.0 kilograms (11.0 lb) of 18 karat (75%) gold, worth approximately US\$407,725 as of 25-AUG-2025. Its base is 13 centimetres (5.1 in) in diameter containing two layers of [malachite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachite "Malachite") which adds another 1.175 kilograms (2.59 lb) to the total weight. Chemist [Sir Martyn Poliakoff](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Martyn_Poliakoff "Sir Martyn Poliakoff") claims that the trophy is hollow, because if it were solid gold, the trophy would weigh 70–80 kilograms (150–180 lb) and would be too heavy to lift;[\[23\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-23)[\[24\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-24) the trophy's original manufacturer has confirmed its hollowness.[\[25\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-25)[\[26\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-26)
Produced by [GDE Bertoni](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDE_Bertoni "GDE Bertoni") in [Paderno Dugnano](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paderno_Dugnano "Paderno Dugnano"), it depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. Gazzaniga described the trophy thus, "The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the compact body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of victory".[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-newtrophy-4)
The Cup used to be kept by the winning team until the final draw of the next tournament, but that is no longer the case. Instead the winners of the tournament receive a bronze replica which is gold-plated rather than solid gold. Likewise, three-time winners keep the replica instead of the original cup.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-newtrophy-4) [Germany](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany_national_football_team "Germany national football team") became the first nation to win the new trophy for the third time when they won the [2014 FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup "2014 FIFA World Cup"),[\[27\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-27) and [Argentina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina_national_football_team "Argentina national football team") became the second nation following their third win in Qatar at the [2022 FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_FIFA_World_Cup "2022 FIFA World Cup").
The trophy has the engraving "FIFA World Cup" on its base. After the [1994 FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_FIFA_World_Cup "1994 FIFA World Cup"), a plate was added to the bottom side of the trophy where the names of winning countries are engraved, names therefore not visible when the trophy is standing upright. The inscriptions state the year in figures and the name of the winning nation in its national language – for example, "1974 *Deutschland*" or "1994 *Brasil*". In 2010, the name of the winning nation was engraved as "2010 Spain" in English, not in Spanish.[\[28\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-globo-28)[\[29\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-uol-live-29) This was corrected in the new plate made after the 2018 World Cup.[\[30\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-30) As of 2022, twelve winners have been engraved on the base. The plate is replaced each World Cup cycle and the names of the trophy winners are rearranged into a spiral to accommodate future winners.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-newtrophy-4)
The original trophy is now permanently kept at the [FIFA World Football Museum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Museum "FIFA Museum") in Zürich, Switzerland. It leaves there only when it goes on its FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour. It is present at the Final draw for the next World Cup, and on the pitch at the World Cup opening game and Final.[\[31\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy_Tour-31) The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour was inaugurated for the [2006 FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FIFA_World_Cup "2006 FIFA World Cup") competition.[\[32\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#cite_note-WCTT-2006-32)
On 3 December 2025, [Lego](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego "Lego") announced that a version of the FIFA World Cup Trophy would be released in March 2026 ahead of the [2026 FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_FIFA_World_Cup "2026 FIFA World Cup").

"But the story has holes. An analysis of his foundry found traces of gold of a different quality from the trophy."
