Kendra Harrison stayed on course to become the first world record holder to win Olympic gold
in the women's 100 metres hurdles in 33 years by safely qualifying through her heats on Saturday.
Bulgaria's Yordanka Donkova
held the world record when she triumphed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the feat has not been repeated since.
A few weeks after failing to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games at the US Olympic trials,
Harrison set the world record of 12.20 in London.
There was a false start in Harrison's heat as
Frenchwoman Laura Valette was yellow-carded
but the American strode through confidently and then surged ahead of her rivals in the final 20 metres to clock 12.74.

Switzerland's first ever women's tennis singles gold medalist **Belinda Bencic** on the podium in Tokyo this evening.
### **Carrono keeps Djokovic out of the medals**
World number one **Novak Djokovic** exited the Tokyo Games on Saturday **without a medal for the third Olympics in a row**, withdrawing from his mixed doubles contest with a shoulder injury shortly after losing the men's singles bronze to **Spain's Pablo Carreño**.
**Carreño** triumphed 6-4 6-7(6) 6-3 over a listless **Djokovic**, just 24 hours after the Serbian was stopped in his bid to complete an historic *Golden Slam*.
"I do have a regret for not winning a medal for my country and opportunities missed both in mixed doubles and singles and, yeah, I just didn't deliver yesterday and today," **Djokovic** told reporters. "The level of tennis dropped also due to exhaustion, you know, mentally and physically."
### **Elbakh, gold for Qatar and new Olympic record**
**Qatar's Fares Ibrahim Elbakh** won the gold medal in the **men's 96 kg weightlifting event** and set an **Olympic record** of **a combined lift of 402 kg** at the Tokyo Games on Saturday.
**Venezuela's Keydomar Vallenilla Sánchez** won sliver and **Georgia's Anton Pliesnoi** claimed bronze.
**Bencic wins Switzerland's first women's singles gold**
**Belinda Bencic** beat **Marketa Vondrousova** 7-5 2-6 6-3 in the gold-medal match of the women's singles to inch Switzerland up the medals table and into 14th. Ukraine's **Elina Svitolina** claimed bronze after beating **Elena Rybakina** in just under two and half hours out on centre court at Ariake Tennis Park.
**Bencic** becomes the first woman to win a singles gold medal for **Switzerland**.
### **Taiwan clinch badminton doubles gold**
**Taiwan's Lee Yang** and **Wang Chi-Lin** won the **badminton men's doubles Olympic gold medal** on Saturday by beating China's **Li Junhui** and **Liu Yuchen** 21-18 21-12 at Musashino Forest Plaza. The Chinese duo had to make do with silver, while **Malaysia**'s **Aaron Chia** and **Soh Wooi Yik** bagged the event's bronze medal.
### **Stahl takes discus gold**
**Sweden's Daniel Stahl** won the **men's discus gold medal** on Saturday. **Simon Pettersson** made it one-two for Sweden by claiming the silver ahead of Austria's **Lukas Weishaidinger**.
**Jamaica take gold, silver and bronze in the women's 100m**
**Jamaica** finished first, second and third in a pulsating **women's 100m final**. **Elaine Thompson-Herah** pipped compatriots **Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce** and **Shericka Jackson**, crossing the line on 10:61 - a **new Olympic Record**, shaving 0.01 off the previous record (10:62), set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988.
It was the **second fastest time over 100m in history**, beating Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's registry of 10:63 set in Kingston last month.
### **Poland come home first in 4x400m Relay Mixed Final**
**Poland** took the gold medal in the 4x400m Relay Mixed Final, crossing the line on 3:09.87 ahead of the **Dominica Republic** and **Team USA**, silver and bronze respectively.
### **ROC see off France to win women's sabre team event**
**ROC** added to their gold medal tally at Tokyo 2020 after the women's fencing team beat **France** 45-41 in today's sabre team final.
### **Another gold for Riner and France**
**Teddy Riner** will have to find some more space on his mantelpiece for his **third Olympic gold medal** as France beat Japan 4–1 in the judo mixed team final. Riner, along with team mates Clarisse Agbegnenou, Axel Clerget and Sarah Leonie Cysique won their respective contests at Nippon Budokan on Saturday while **Germany** and **Israel** won bronze after winning their respective contests against the Netherlands and ROC 4-2 and 4-1.

### **Nina Christen, gold and new Olympic record**
**Nina Christen** claimed **gold** in the women's **50m rifle three positions** event, and set a new Olympic record in the process. The Swiss super sharp shooter scored 463.9, taking the record from her opponent in the final ROC's **Yulia Zykova**. It's Christen's second time on the podium during the Games - she took bronze in the Women's 10 metre air rifle.
ROC's **Yulia Karimova**, a gold medalist in the same event at the 2018 ISSF World Shooting Championships, collected the bronze.
### **New Zealand win fourth gold of the Games**
**New Zealand** won the women's **Rugby Sevens event**, beating **France** 26–12 in today's final at Tokyo stadium. **Fiji** made history by taking bronze after winning their match with **Great Britain** 21-12.

**Mete Gazoz** has landed Turkey's first ever Olympic archery gold in the men's event.
### **World record holder Harrison set for 100m hurdles gold dash**
American **Kendra Harrison stayed on course to become the first world record holder to win Olympic gold** in the women's 100 metres hurdles in 33 years by safely qualifying through her heats on Saturday.
**Bulgaria's Yordanka Donkova** held the world record when she triumphed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the feat has not been repeated since.
A few weeks after failing to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games at the US Olympic trials, **Harrison set the world record of 12.20 in London.**
There was a false start in Harrison's heat as **Frenchwoman Laura Valette was yellow-carded** but the American strode through confidently and then surged ahead of her rivals in the final 20 metres to clock 12.74.
"**That's not one of my fastest times**. I just plan to improve every single round," Harrison said.
"I have to set my race up better and race and attack every hurdle and take it down a notch and run faster. **I don't run for a time, I'm just trying to get them spots, whatever it takes**."

The Chinese athlete **becomes the first man to win back-to-back Olympic titles** in table tennis after successfully defending his Rio 2016 title.

**Team USA's Caeleb Dressel** broke his own world record as he took the gold medal in the men's 100 butterfly.
Silver went to **Kristof Milak of Hungary**, while **Andrei Minakov of ROC** clinched the bronze.
