Room for fewer than 10 spaces, get there early!\n🌟\nHighlights:\nMultiple hilltop lookouts, short but challenging hike, almost 360-degree views from Eliot Tower\n👉\nTrail Guide to Blue Hills Reservation Skyline Loop\nThe\nGreat Blue Hill to Skyline Trail in Blue Hills Reservation\nis a short but challenging hike near Boston. The Skyline Loop offers several steep scrambles (we had to drop the dog’s leashes multiple times in order to use our hands), multiple lookouts from both Hancock Hill (509 feet) and Hemenway Hill (473 feet), and panoramic views of the city from Eliot Tower atop Great Blue Hill.\nIt’s one of the most rugged hikes close to Boston and feels surprisingly wild for being just minutes from the city. This is a hike for the more experienced hiker or someone that wants to challenge themselves. You’ll be following the blue blazes and Skyline Trail signs the whole way which makes it easy to navigate.who\n2. Weir Hill Reservation – Overlook Loop\n📍\nNorth Andover, MA\n(30 miles or 35 minutes from Boston)\nI loved this\nhike at Weir Hill\noutside of the historic downtown Andover with it’s New England charm and lots of coffee shops to choose from! Most of the trail hugs the scenic Stevens Pond and then Lake Cochichewick. It’s a Trustees property so you know it’s going to be well-kept and well-marked!\n🥾\nMiles & Difficulty:\n3.99-mile loop, moderate\n📈\nElevation Gain:\n387 ft\n🚙\nParking:\nClick to navigate to 42.68925, -71.10634\n, medium lot\n🌟\nHighlights:\ntrail all along Lake Cochichewick with scenic water views, plus views atop a wide open meadow\n👉\nTrail Guide to Weir Hill Reservation Loop\nWe loved how dog-friendly it was with access to the water throughout most of the hike. The dogs also loved climbing up the meadow hill at the end, and we all sat to enjoy the view over the meadow and lake in the distance.\n3. Mount Wachusett – Summit Loop\n📍\nPrinceton, MA\n(60 miles or 1 hr 10 minutes from Boston)\nJust over an hour from Boston, you’ll get a satisfying summit experience climbing\nMount Wachusett\nwith expansive views from the top. It’s the highest points in eastern Massachusetts, and you’ll get forest trails, boardwalks, a couple scrambles, and a wide-open mountaintop all in one.\n🥾\nMiles & Difficulty:\n4.07-mile loop (go clockwise), moderate to strenuous (a couple scrambles coming down)\n📈\nElevation Gain:\n1089 ft\n🚙\nParking:\nNavigate here: 42.50785, -71.89229\nparking along Bolton Road\n🌟\nHighlights:\nMountain summit, fun hike. Well-marked loop, forested trails with a true mountain feel.\n👉\nTrail Guide to Mount Wachusett\nI could tell this one can get crowded on weekends, so get there early for a quieter experience. There is also an access road to nearly the top of the summit, so don’t be surprised if you hardly see anyone on the trail and then more at the top!\n4. Breakheart Reservation – Ridge Loop Trail\n📍\nSaugus, MA\n(13 miles or 20 minutes from Boston)\nI loved it here! Pulling in and parking, you’ll feel like you’re at a tourist attraction. Lots of cars, a Visitor’s Center, and then once you’re on the\nRidge Trail\n, we saw almost no one. There is a big paved loop here which attracts a lot of people but that’s why you’ll find solitude once you’re in the woods!\n🥾\nMiles & Difficulty:\n3.1-mile loop (clockwise), moderate\n📈\nElevation Gain:\n525 ft\n🚙\nParking:\nNavigate here: 42.48333, -71.02755\nparking along Forest Road or in the small lot at the Breakheart Visitors Center (free!)\n🌟\nHighlights:\nexpansive property, quiet trails, several views, lakeside paths (swimming for pups!) 🐶💦\n👉\nTrail Guide to Breakheart Reservation Loop\nThere are no steep scrambles here, but there are several ups and downs in the beginning until you get to the Castle Rock view. After that, it’s mostly downhill as the trail winds its way along both lakes and leads you back to the parking lot.\nThis was another super dog-friendly hike that provided lots of access to water on the second half of hike once you reach the lakes. But if your dog wants more off-leash time to run, head to Breakheart’s dog park – The Barking Lot – at 177 Forest St.\n5. Ward Reservation – Holt Hill & Solstice Stones\n📍\nAndover, MA\n(24 miles or 28 minutes from Boston)\nAnother gem in Andover and another Trustees property! This\nhike at Ward Reservation\nfelt like a classic New England hike with stone walls, farm trails, and old logging roads through towering forests. This is a great fall hike to do near Boston.\n🥾\nMiles & Difficulty:\n3-mile loop, easy to moderate\n📈\nElevation Gain:\n290 ft\n🚙\nParking:\nClick here to navigate to 42.64053, -71.11265\nlarge lot, $6 parking fee (cards accepted) for non-Trustees members \n🌟\nHighlights:\nWide paths on old logging roads, Holt Hill (the highest point in Essex County), wide open meadow with views of the Boston skyline 🏙️\n👉\nTrail Guide to Ward Reservation\nAt the end of the loop, you can head left up the paved driveway for views from Holt Hill, the highest point in Essex County. Don’t miss the Solstice Stones near the summit—an artistic and mysterious landmark.\nThis is a very dog-friendly trail with nothing too difficult, but there’s not a lot of access to water so be sure to pack some.\n6. Rocky Woods Reservation Loop Trail\n📍\nMedfield, MA\n(26 miles or 31 minutes from Boston)\nAnother Trustees property (so you know it’s going to be good!) that felt like a little dream. This\nRocky Woods Loop\nis a gentle hike with nothing technical about it. You go by multiple lakes and along serene paths in the woods, which felt very peaceful.\n🥾\nMiles & Difficulty:\n3.08-mile loop (clockwise), easy to moderate\n📈\nElevation Gain:\n384 ft\n🚙\nParking:\nNavigate here: 42.20646, -71.27665\n, large lot, $6 parking fee (cards accepted) for non-Trustees members \n🌟\nHighlights:\nSwimming for dogs, approved off-leash trails, views, easy to navigate \n👉\nTrail Guide to Rocky Woods Reservation Loop\nThe best part about this hike are the designated off-leash trails which allowed our dogs room to roam and sniff. Everyone with dogs off-leash was very respectful and called their dogs back right away when we approached.\nThe trails here are well-marked and will take you up to a scenic view before looping around by a lake where the dogs can cool off or get some water before arriving at the parking lot.\n7. Gibbs Mountain\n📍\nFramingham, MA\n(29 miles or 35 minutes from Boston)\nFar enough outside of Boston, you’ll feel like you’re on a little mountain escape here.\nGibbs Mountain\nis another peaceful forest hike that takes you along wide, soft, padded pine trails as you make your way up Gibbs Mountain.\n🥾\nMiles & Difficulty:\n3.88-mile loop, moderate\n📈\nElevation Gain:\n446 ft\n🚙\nParking:\nNavigate to 42.33899, -71.49944\n, large parking lot off Broadmeadow Road\n🌟\nHighlights:\nWide paths, meadow views, pond for swimming 💦🐶\n👉\nTrail Guide to Gibbs Mountain Loop\nThere is no big overlook here, but this is a hike I would do again. The elevation you gain atop Gibbs Mountain makes you feel nice and removed, and you do get meadow views that you walk along, plus a lake for the pups towards the end.\nIt’s a gentle hike that would satisfy anyone looking for several hours wandering through the woods with peaceful scenery. Lynn Woods Reservation\n📍\nLynn, MA\n(15 miles or 35 minutes from Boston)\nLynn Woods features over 30 miles of trails, but the hike to Dungeon Rock is the highlight. You’ll pass scenic ponds, explore a unique man-made cave, and enjoy views from the top of Stone Tower on Burrill Hill.\n🥾\nMiles & Difficulty:\n4.5-mile loop, moderate\n📈\nElevation Gain:\n311 ft\n🚙\nParking:\nNavigate to 42.49311, -70.97801\n🌟\nHighlights:\nbeautiful scenery, well-marked paths, and varied terrain\n9. This is a hike for the more experienced hiker or someone that wants to challenge themselves. You’ll be following the blue blazes and Skyline Trail signs the whole way which makes it easy to navigate.who\n\n### **2\\. Weir Hill Reservation – Overlook Loop**\n📍 *North Andover, MA* (30 miles or 35 minutes from Boston)  \nI loved this **[hike at Weir Hill](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/weir-hill-reservation-trail-guide\/)** outside of the historic downtown Andover with it’s New England charm and lots of coffee shops to choose from! Most of the trail hugs the scenic Stevens Pond and then Lake Cochichewick. The dogs also loved climbing up the meadow hill at the end, and we all sat to enjoy the view over the meadow and lake in the distance.\n\n### **3\\. Mount Wachusett – Summit Loop**\n📍 *Princeton, MA* (60 miles or 1 hr 10 minutes from Boston)  \nJust over an hour from Boston, you’ll get a satisfying summit experience climbing **[Mount Wachusett](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/mount-wachusett-hike\/)** with expansive views from the top. There is also an access road to nearly the top of the summit, so don’t be surprised if you hardly see anyone on the trail and then more at the top\\!\n\n### **4\\. Breakheart Reservation – Ridge Loop Trail**\n📍 *Saugus, MA* (13 miles or 20 minutes from Boston)  \nI loved it here! Pulling in and parking, you’ll feel like you’re at a tourist attraction. Lots of cars, a Visitor’s Center, and then once you’re on the **[Ridge Trail](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/breakheart-reservation-trail-guide-massachusetts\/)**, we saw almost no one. But if your dog wants more off-leash time to run, head to Breakheart’s dog park – The Barking Lot – at 177 Forest St.\n\n### **5\\. Ward Reservation – Holt Hill & Solstice Stones**\n📍 *Andover, MA* (24 miles or 28 minutes from Boston)  \nAnother gem in Andover and another Trustees property! This **[hike at Ward Reservation](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/hike-ward-reservation-holt-hill-andover\/)** felt like a classic New England hike with stone walls, farm trails, and old logging roads through towering forests. This is a hike for the more experienced hiker or someone that wants to challenge themselves. You’ll be following the blue blazes and Skyline Trail signs the whole way which makes it easy to navigate.who\n\n### **2\\. Weir Hill Reservation – Overlook Loop**\n📍 *North Andover, MA* (30 miles or 35 minutes from Boston)  \nI loved this **[hike at Weir Hill](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/weir-hill-reservation-trail-guide\/)** outside of the historic downtown Andover with it’s New England charm and lots of coffee shops to choose from! Most of the trail hugs the scenic Stevens Pond and then Lake Cochichewick. The dogs also loved climbing up the meadow hill at the end, and we all sat to enjoy the view over the meadow and lake in the distance.\n\n### **3\\. Mount Wachusett – Summit Loop**\n📍 *Princeton, MA* (60 miles or 1 hr 10 minutes from Boston)  \nJust over an hour from Boston, you’ll get a satisfying summit experience climbing **[Mount Wachusett](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/mount-wachusett-hike\/)** with expansive views from the top. There is also an access road to nearly the top of the summit, so don’t be surprised if you hardly see anyone on the trail and then more at the top\\!\n\n### **4\\. Breakheart Reservation – Ridge Loop Trail**\n📍 *Saugus, MA* (13 miles or 20 minutes from Boston)  \nI loved it here! Pulling in and parking, you’ll feel like you’re at a tourist attraction. Lots of cars, a Visitor’s Center, and then once you’re on the **[Ridge Trail](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/breakheart-reservation-trail-guide-massachusetts\/)**, we saw almost no one. But if your dog wants more off-leash time to run, head to Breakheart’s dog park – The Barking Lot – at 177 Forest St.\n\n### **5\\. Ward Reservation – Holt Hill & Solstice Stones**\n📍 *Andover, MA* (24 miles or 28 minutes from Boston)  \nAnother gem in Andover and another Trustees property! This **[hike at Ward Reservation](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/hike-ward-reservation-holt-hill-andover\/)** felt like a classic New England hike with stone walls, farm trails, and old logging roads through towering forests. Rocky Woods Reservation Loop Trail**\n📍 *Medfield, MA* (26 miles or 31 minutes from Boston)  \nAnother Trustees property (so you know it’s going to be good!) that felt like a little dream. This **[Rocky Woods Loop](https:\/\/earlybirdonthetrail.com\/rocky-woods-hike-guide-medfield-ma\/)** is a gentle hike with nothing technical about it. This post rounds up the 10 best hikes I’ve found less than one hour from Boston (with one exception that’s 75 minutes 😊), so you can find your next favorite trail to hit after work or on a weekend day (all before brunch!) without driving too far. And if you’re willing to drive a bit further , I’ve included 5 BONUS HIKES at the end that give you true mountain views 2 hours or less from Boston . First hike on the bonus list at end.. Second hike on bonus list at end.. Living in a bustling area can make it hard to find that peace and solitude we all crave and need. Especially if you’re living in Boston with your best friend 🐶, you’ve got to get out sometimes! 🐾 Each of these hikes is dog-friendly (and some kid-friendly, too!), and some even have OFF-LEASH trails! Room for fewer than 10 spaces, get there early! 🌟 Highlights: Multiple hilltop lookouts, short but challenging hike, almost 360-degree views from Eliot Tower 👉 Trail Guide to Blue Hills Reservation Skyline Loop The Great Blue Hill to Skyline Trail in Blue Hills Reservation is a short but challenging hike near Boston. The Skyline Loop offers several steep scrambles (we had to drop the dog’s leashes multiple times in order to use our hands), multiple lookouts from both Hancock Hill (509 feet) and Hemenway Hill (473 feet), and panoramic views of the city from Eliot Tower atop Great Blue Hill. It’s one of the most rugged hikes close to Boston and feels surprisingly wild for being just minutes from the city. This is a hike for the more experienced hiker or someone that wants to challenge themselves. You’ll be following the blue blazes and Skyline Trail signs the whole way which makes it easy to navigate.who 2. Weir Hill Reservation – Overlook Loop 📍 North Andover, MA (30 miles or 35 minutes from Boston) I loved this hike at Weir Hill outside of the historic downtown Andover with it’s New England charm and lots of coffee shops to choose from! Most of the trail hugs the scenic Stevens Pond and then Lake Cochichewick. It’s a Trustees property so you know it’s going to be well-kept and well-marked! 🥾 Miles & Difficulty: 3.99-mile loop, moderate 📈 Elevation Gain: 387 ft 🚙 Parking: Click to navigate to 42.68925, -71.10634 , medium lot 🌟 Highlights: trail all along Lake Cochichewick with scenic water views, plus views atop a wide open meadow 👉 Trail Guide to Weir Hill Reservation Loop We loved how dog-friendly it was with access to the water throughout most of the hike. The dogs also loved climbing up the meadow hill at the end, and we all sat to enjoy the view over the meadow and lake in the distance. 3. Mount Wachusett – Summit Loop 📍 Princeton, MA (60 miles or 1 hr 10 minutes from Boston) Just over an hour from Boston, you’ll get a satisfying summit experience climbing Mount Wachusett with expansive views from the top. It’s the highest points in eastern Massachusetts, and you’ll get forest trails, boardwalks, a couple scrambles, and a wide-open mountaintop all in one. 🥾 Miles & Difficulty: 4.07-mile loop (go clockwise), moderate to strenuous (a couple scrambles coming down) 📈 Elevation Gain: 1089 ft 🚙 Parking: Navigate here: 42.50785, -71.89229 parking along Bolton Road 🌟 Highlights: Mountain summit, fun hike. Well-marked loop, forested trails with a true mountain feel. 👉 Trail Guide to Mount Wachusett I could tell this one can get crowded on weekends, so get there early for a quieter experience. There is also an access road to nearly the top of the summit, so don’t be surprised if you hardly see anyone on the trail and then more at the top! 4. Breakheart Reservation – Ridge Loop Trail 📍 Saugus, MA (13 miles or 20 minutes from Boston) I loved it here! Pulling in and parking, you’ll feel like you’re at a tourist attraction. Lots of cars, a Visitor’s Center, and then once you’re on the Ridge Trail , we saw almost no one. There is a big paved loop here which attracts a lot of people but that’s why you’ll find solitude once you’re in the woods! 🥾 Miles & Difficulty: 3.1-mile loop (clockwise), moderate 📈 Elevation Gain: 525 ft 🚙 Parking: Navigate here: 42.48333, -71.02755 parking along Forest Road or in the small lot at the Breakheart Visitors Center (free!) 🌟 Highlights: expansive property, quiet trails, several views, lakeside paths (swimming for pups!) 🐶💦 👉 Trail Guide to Breakheart Reservation Loop There are no steep scrambles here, but there are several ups and downs in the beginning until you get to the Castle Rock view. After that, it’s mostly downhill as the trail winds its way along both lakes and leads you back to the parking lot. This was another super dog-friendly hike that provided lots of access to water on the second half of hike once you reach the lakes. But if your dog wants more off-leash time to run, head to Breakheart’s dog park – The Barking Lot – at 177 Forest St. 5. Ward Reservation – Holt Hill & Solstice Stones 📍 Andover, MA (24 miles or 28 minutes from Boston) Another gem in Andover and another Trustees property! This hike at Ward Reservation felt like a classic New England hike with stone walls, farm trails, and old logging roads through towering forests. This is a great fall hike to do near Boston. 🥾 Miles & Difficulty: 3-mile loop, easy to moderate 📈 Elevation Gain: 290 ft 🚙 Parking: Click here to navigate to 42.64053, -71.11265 large lot, $6 parking fee (cards accepted) for non-Trustees members 🌟 Highlights: Wide paths on old logging roads, Holt Hill (the highest point in Essex County), wide open meadow with views of the Boston skyline 🏙️ 👉 Trail Guide to Ward Reservation At the end of the loop, you can head left up the paved driveway for views from Holt Hill, the highest point in Essex County. Don’t miss the Solstice Stones near the summit—an artistic and mysterious landmark. This is a very dog-friendly trail with nothing too difficult, but there’s not a lot of access to water so be sure to pack some. 6. Rocky Woods Reservation Loop Trail 📍 Medfield, MA (26 miles or 31 minutes from Boston) Another Trustees property (so you know it’s going to be good!) that felt like a little dream. This Rocky Woods Loop is a gentle hike with nothing technical about it. You go by multiple lakes and along serene paths in the woods, which felt very peaceful. 🥾 Miles & Difficulty: 3.08-mile loop (clockwise), easy to moderate 📈 Elevation Gain: 384 ft 🚙 Parking: Navigate here: 42.20646, -71.27665 , large lot, $6 parking fee (cards accepted) for non-Trustees members 🌟 Highlights: Swimming for dogs, approved off-leash trails, views, easy to navigate 👉 Trail Guide to Rocky Woods Reservation Loop The best part about this hike are the designated off-leash trails which allowed our dogs room to roam and sniff. Everyone with dogs off-leash was very respectful and called their dogs back right away when we approached. The trails here are well-marked and will take you up to a scenic view before looping around by a lake where the dogs can cool off or get some water before arriving at the parking lot. 7. Gibbs Mountain 📍 Framingham, MA (29 miles or 35 minutes from Boston) Far enough outside of Boston, you’ll feel like you’re on a little mountain escape here. Gibbs Mountain is another peaceful forest hike that takes you along wide, soft, padded pine trails as you make your way up Gibbs Mountain. 🥾 Miles & Difficulty: 3.88-mile loop, moderate 📈 Elevation Gain: 446 ft 🚙 Parking: Navigate to 42.33899, -71.49944 , large parking lot off Broadmeadow Road 🌟 Highlights: Wide paths, meadow views, pond for swimming 💦🐶 👉 Trail Guide to Gibbs Mountain Loop There is no big overlook here, but this is a hike I would do again. The elevation you gain atop Gibbs Mountain makes you feel nice and removed, and you do get meadow views that you walk along, plus a lake for the pups towards the end. It’s a gentle hike that would satisfy anyone looking for several hours wandering through the woods with peaceful scenery. Lynn Woods Reservation 📍 Lynn, MA (15 miles or 35 minutes from Boston) Lynn Woods features over 30 miles of trails, but the hike to Dungeon Rock is the highlight. This is a hike for the more experienced hiker or someone that wants to challenge themselves. Weir Hill Reservation – Overlook Loop 📍 North Andover, MA (30 miles or 35 minutes from Boston) I loved this [hike at Weir Hill](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/weir-hill-reservation-trail-guide/) outside of the historic downtown Andover with it’s New England charm and lots of coffee shops to choose from! Most of the trail hugs the scenic Stevens Pond and then Lake Cochichewick. The dogs also loved climbing up the meadow hill at the end, and we all sat to enjoy the view over the meadow and lake in the distance. ### 3\. Mount Wachusett – Summit Loop 📍 Princeton, MA (60 miles or 1 hr 10 minutes from Boston) Just over an hour from Boston, you’ll get a satisfying summit experience climbing [Mount Wachusett](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/mount-wachusett-hike/) with expansive views from the top. There is also an access road to nearly the top of the summit, so don’t be surprised if you hardly see anyone on the trail and then more at the top\! ### 4\. Breakheart Reservation – Ridge Loop Trail 📍 Saugus, MA (13 miles or 20 minutes from Boston) I loved it here! Pulling in and parking, you’ll feel like you’re at a tourist attraction. Lots of cars, a Visitor’s Center, and then once you’re on the [Ridge Trail](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/breakheart-reservation-trail-guide-massachusetts/), we saw almost no one. But if your dog wants more off-leash time to run, head to Breakheart’s dog park – The Barking Lot – at 177 Forest St. ### 5\. Ward Reservation – Holt Hill & Solstice Stones 📍 Andover, MA (24 miles or 28 minutes from Boston) Another gem in Andover and another Trustees property! This [hike at Ward Reservation](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/hike-ward-reservation-holt-hill-andover/) felt like a classic New England hike with stone walls, farm trails, and old logging roads through towering forests. Rocky Woods Reservation Loop Trail 📍 Medfield, MA (26 miles or 31 minutes from Boston) Another Trustees property (so you know it’s going to be good!) that felt like a little dream. This [Rocky Woods Loop](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/rocky-woods-hike-guide-medfield-ma/) is a gentle hike with nothing technical about it. Gibbs Mountain 📍 Framingham, MA (29 miles or 35 minutes from Boston) Far enough outside of Boston, you’ll feel like you’re on a little mountain escape here. Most of the trail hugs the scenic Stevens Pond and then Lake Cochichewick. The dogs also loved climbing up the meadow hill at the end, and we all sat to enjoy the view over the meadow and lake in the distance. ### 3\. Mount Wachusett – Summit Loop 📍 Princeton, MA (60 miles or 1 hr 10 minutes from Boston) Just over an hour from Boston, you’ll get a satisfying summit experience climbing [Mount Wachusett](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/mount-wachusett-hike/) with expansive views from the top. There is also an access road to nearly the top of the summit, so don’t be surprised if you hardly see anyone on the trail and then more at the top\! ### 4\. Breakheart Reservation – Ridge Loop Trail 📍 Saugus, MA (13 miles or 20 minutes from Boston) I loved it here! Pulling in and parking, you’ll feel like you’re at a tourist attraction. Lots of cars, a Visitor’s Center, and then once you’re on the [Ridge Trail](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/breakheart-reservation-trail-guide-massachusetts/), we saw almost no one. But if your dog wants more off-leash time to run, head to Breakheart’s dog park – The Barking Lot – at 177 Forest St. ### 5\. Ward Reservation – Holt Hill & Solstice Stones 📍 Andover, MA (24 miles or 28 minutes from Boston) Another gem in Andover and another Trustees property! This [hike at Ward Reservation](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/hike-ward-reservation-holt-hill-andover/) felt like a classic New England hike with stone walls, farm trails, and old logging roads through towering forests. Rocky Woods Reservation Loop Trail 📍 Medfield, MA (26 miles or 31 minutes from Boston) Another Trustees property (so you know it’s going to be good!) that felt like a little dream. This [Rocky Woods Loop](https://earlybirdonthetrail.com/rocky-woods-hike-guide-medfield-ma/) is a gentle hike with nothing technical about it. Gibbs Mountain 📍 Framingham, MA (29 miles or 35 minutes from Boston) Far enough outside of Boston, you’ll feel like you’re on a little mountain escape here.
