You will receive only email notices if you have a [MyDMV account](https://dmvapp.nv.gov/dmv/application/dmvportal/pages/default.aspx) and have chosen to go paperless. You are responsible for timely registration renewal even if you do not receive a notice. Late fees based on the expiration date are assessed for late renewals. Nevada has no grace period. You may obtain a temporary movement permit through [MyDMV](https://dmvapp.nv.gov/DMV/Application/DMVPortal/Pages/Default.aspx) or at your nearest [DMV office](https://dmv.nv.gov/locat.htm) if you must drive after your registration is expired. ## Renewal Options You may renew approximately 35 days before expiration or up to 18 months after (late fees apply) using the online, kiosks or emission station options. Renew in person outside of these time frames. You must register your vehicle for a full year. There are no partial registrations. Trailers may be registered for one year or three years. Have your current odometer reading ready. - Internet ### Internet  [One-Time Renewal](https://dmvapp.nv.gov/DMV/VR/RegRenewal/VRRenewal/VR_Ren_Input.aspx) Use [MyDMV](https://dmvapp.nv.gov/DMV/Application/DMVPortal/Pages/Default.aspx) if you need to change your address or get a movement permit for an emissions test. **Renewals and license plates are sent to the address on record.** We do not accept address changes by email or send stickers to a temporary address. **Tax Exemptions -** You may apply your county-issued tax exemption during an online renewal. Contact your [County Assessor](https://dmv.nv.gov/assessor.htm) to apply for an exemption for the first time or if your voucher number is rejected. **Complete Streets** - Residents of participating counties have the option to make a \$2 donation to the Complete Streets Program in their county. **Choose e-check\!** We accept electronic checks, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Using e-check saves taxpayer dollars through reduced fees. Debit cards are processed as credit. - Kiosks ### Kiosks  Larger DMV offices and dozens of private locations feature self-service renewal kiosks that print and dispense the registration slip and decal on the spot. Kiosk renewals carry an additional \$4 processing fee. Stations are allowed to charge up to \$10 in addition to the smog check fee. Your vehicle record is updated instantly. Your decal and registration certificate are then mailed to you. #### Tips - **Be sure to bring your registration renewal notice with you to the station.** If your renewal is late, the system will automatically add in any late fees due. - **Pay DMV renewal fees by cash, check or major credit card.** Stations deposit cash and checks with the DMV on a daily basis. Credit cards are processed directly through the DMV. - **You will receive separate receipts for the emission inspection and registration renewal.** The renewal receipt will contain a DMV Super Transaction ID number in case you need to contact us. If your renewal is rejected, the operator will give you a reason for the rejection and ask you to contact the DMV. #### Find a station Emissions inspectors at participating stations can offer to renew your registration. Choose your county, scroll to the right and click on the "REG" link for a list of participating stations.  - In-Person ### In-Person You may renew in person at any [DMV office](https://dmv.nv.gov/locat.htm) or [County Assessor](https://dmv.nv.gov/assessor.htm) office which offers vehicle registration. This is suggested only if you have multiple DMV transactions or unusual problems such as a registration suspension. Bring your Evidence of Insurance and driver license with you to verify your coverage. [Professional Firefighter plates](https://dmv.nv.gov/platesfire.htm) and [Classic Vehicle plates](https://dmv.nv.gov/platesclassic.htm) which carry a smog check exemption may not be renewed by internet, emission station or kiosk. The DMV offers one-time waivers and Clark County operates a repair voucher program. If your vehicle has failed the initial emission test, you must repair it and pass a second test to be eligible for registration. If it still fails after repairs, you may be eligible for a waiver if you meet the requirements below. If your registration is expired or about to expire, you can get a movement permit online through [MyDMV](https://dmvapp.nv.gov/DMV/Application/DMVPortal/Pages/Default.aspx) or at a [DMV office](https://dmv.nv.gov/locat.htm). You may be charged late fees and/or cited by law enforcement if you operate a vehicle on public streets with an expired registration. ### Waiver Requirements If the vehicle still fails after being repaired, it may be eligible for a waiver. Your vehicle must fail: - Carbon monoxide and/or hydrocarbon levels exceeding standards for 1968-1995 light duty vehicles and all heavy duty vehicles, or, - Illuminated "Check Engine" lamp for 1996 and newer light duty models. Waivers will not be issued to: - Vehicles eligible for warranty coverage. - Smoking Vehicles - The vehicle must be repaired with no limit on cost. - Emission Device Tampering - The vehicle must be repaired with no limit on cost. A waiver is only valid for one year. The vehicle must be repaired prior to the next registration year. Emission components could be covered under warranty for up to eight years or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, under federal law. The waiver application must include receipts from the station showing that at least \$450 has been spent on parts other than a catalytic converter, fuel inlet restrictor or air injection system, or on labor other than emission testing if the repairs evidenced by the receipt were directly related to the deficiency in emissions. If the vehicle is not repaired at an automated 2G station, it will not be eligible for a waiver, regardless of the cost incurred. Vehicles repaired at a non-2G garage are not eligible for a waiver. If the vehicle is repaired at a station, an application for a waiver must include receipts from the station showing that at least \$200 has been spent on parts other than a catalytic converter, fuel inlet restictor or air injection system, or on labor other than emission testing if the repairs evidenced by the receipt were directly related to the deficiency in emissions. If the vehicle is repaired by the owner, the application must include receipts or other evidence that at least \$200 has been spent on parts other than a catalytic converter, fuel inlet restrictor or air injection system purchased within 14 days after the initial emission test. **If your vehicle still fails after repairs** and it failed the initial test, you did the repairs pursuant to your county's requirements, you met the financial limit to obtain a waiver and it still fails for hydrocarbons/carbon monoxide of a check engine light, bring your vehicle, both failed certificates, and receipts for all repair work to a [DMV Emissions Lab](https://dmv.nv.gov/regrenewal.htm#Contacts) to request a waiver.
