| Boilerpipe Text | How long does a battery replacement take and will my hard disk have to be erased?
I went to an Apple Store in my area and they ran a bunch of diagnostic tests and told me that my MacBook battery needs to be replaced. I'm planning on waiting until summer since I am a student and all of my classes are online and basically my whole life is on my laptop. I have a backup drive and regularly use it but in the past I have had issues with the Genius Bar attempting to restore my old laptop (it too was having battery issues and shut down mid backup which damaged the backup drive and I lost everything). Right now my laptop dies if it is not plugged in for 5 minutes and so I really need the battery replacement but am worried about losing my data again.
My second question is approximately how long it will take if I send it in myself. I know that it can be a range and is different depending on a number of factors but I am planning on taking summer classes. If it is more than 2 weeks is there a way that I could "hire" a temporary laptop while mine is being repaired?
Sorry that this post is so long!

- [Replacement MacBook Air Battery drains excessivly while shut down Folk, I recently had to replace the original battery of my MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017), which is running Monterey 12.4. I obviously took it to the only place I would trust with this work, my local Apple Store. The change was as expected, and I walked away thrilled that it was done albeit painlessly, even though I had to pay for the replacement - which is not my concern. Like most batteries, it was not fully charged, so I received a battery that needed to be completely charged. I left it plugged in for about 2.5 hours until it reached full capacity, at which point I shut the machine down, and put it away. About 5 days later when I went to use the laptop, I discovered the battery was completely dead. I considered it an anomaly and didn't give it too much thought - so I recharged the battery to 100% again, and once more put it away, this time for about 2 weeks. Only to once again discover the battery was completely drained. I contacted the Genius Bar and brought the MBA back in, explained my situation and left it for their diagnosis and repair. Initially they suggested that it was possible that the laptop was not completely shutting down, and that there may be a need to wipe out the drive, to make certain that it was not an application that was preventing the machine from truly shutting down. Once more they shipped the laptop to their service center, and decided to replace the battery a second time, on the 90 day warranty of the first replacement, without having to wipe it clean. I now have the machine back in my possession, and it appears the problem has not been corrected. So to make certain that I did not have a software/driver conflict, I decided to wipe it clean and run some tests against the new battery and new OS installation. Earlier today I charged the battery until the indicator read 100% and the light on the charger had changed to green. With the charger plugged in I completely shut down the machine and left it unattended for about 5 hours. When I came back and started the machine, I had already lost 7% of the charge. I know that this is not common, it certainly wasn't the case when I first purchased this machine and the battery was new. However, I can't seem to identify the source of the problem, nor does there appear to be a solution online, other then some of the comments concerning keeping Bluetooth on, which is not my case, since I have disabled it. Worse yet is that the Apple team seems to now see this as a problem. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? Other than taking it back to Apple Care? 2646 5](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254016939)
- [How bad is an inflated Macbook battery? The screws have been starting to fall off the bottom panel and I’ve been noticing this for a few months, but only recently has it really been pushing. I decided to take a look, and it seems like there were rubber bubbles pushing on the panel. Eventually I found out those were probably the batteries. Since then, I’ve unplugged the charger, shut it down and it’s currently living under a bucket in my basement just in case anything happens. How bad actually is an inflated battery? Everything I’ve seen only just tells me that I should replace it. I don’t really want to do this because it’s out of warranty, and I’ll be getting a new pc in a few months anyways. Until then, I don’t NEED to use it, and it’s only purpose left would be to transfer all my data to the new computer. According to the Apple website, a replacement should set me back around \$259, which is not money I want to spend if I don’t have to. So now my question is, do I really have to replace it if I won’t be using it all that much? 5465 7](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251467081)

Hi,
Macbook battery replacement doesn’t require erasing hard disk.
For your second question, we can’t really tell you how long will it take, as it depends on many factors, but certainly one to two weeks if you send it yourself.
I however advise you to make the battery replacement at an Apple Store, as it takes maybe 30 min to 2 hours.

If the battery is about to fail, the next step is that it will swell. That can cause damage to other parts and possibly a fire.
So you need to have it replaced now. Apple does not do battery replacements in store. And they recommend that you have an external backup before any repair as the disk may get erased (also depends on your model/year).
The other questions need to be answered by Apple. We are just users like you. Take it back to the store and find out which method is the quickest. Mailing it seems to be slower.
And, get an external drive to back up everything before handing it over.
