It is always quoted in pairs like the EUR to USD (the euro and the U.S. dollar) or USD to CAD (the U.S. dollar and the Canadian dollar). This is a standard used across the industry. The first currency of a currency pair is called the “base currency,” and the second currency is called the “quote currency.” The currency pair shows how much of the quote currency is needed to purchase one unit of the base currency. Most of the time, the U.S. dollar is considered the base currency, and quotes are expressed in units of US \\$1 per quote currency (for example, USD to JPY or USD to CAD).\n\nThe only exceptions to this convention are quotes in relation to the euro (EUR), the pound sterling (GBP), the Australian dollar (AUD), and the New Zealand dollar (NZD). It is always quoted in pairs like the EUR to USD (the euro and the U.S. dollar) or USD to CAD (the U.S. dollar and the Canadian dollar). This is a standard used across the industry. The first currency of a currency pair is called the “base currency,” and the second currency is called the “quote currency.” The currency pair shows how much of the quote currency is needed to purchase one unit of the base currency. Most of the time, the U.S. dollar is considered the base currency, and quotes are expressed in units of US \$1 per quote currency (for example, USD to JPY or USD to CAD). The only exceptions to this convention are quotes in relation to the euro (EUR), the pound sterling (GBP), the Australian dollar (AUD), and the New Zealand dollar (NZD). These four are quoted as dollars per foreign currency and are represented as EUR to USD, GBP to USD, AUD to USD, NZD to USD. Rates for major currency pairings.
