Fantastic people they are.”\nThe assailant is still at large.\nBeau Mason, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner, told reporters that authorities interviewed two “persons of interest” on Thursday, but they were later released. Noting that the individuals faced scrutiny and threats, Mason said, “We ask the public to be patient with the investigative process. These individuals were not suspects, they were people of interest…. They don’t deserve that harassment for being subject to that.”\nHe said that they have been able to track the movements of the shooter, starting at about 11:52 a.m. MT, when he arrived on campus. “We have tracked his movements on to the campus, through the stairwells, up to the roof, across the roof to a shooting location.” He said that they were able to track his movements after the shooting “as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off of the building and fled off of the campus and enter a neighborhood.”\nHe said that they have “good video footage of this individual,” but that is not yet being released. He said that they are using certain technologies to try to identify the individual, and the video will be released if they are not successful.\nLater, Utah’s Department of Public Safety rand the FBI released a photo of a person of interest.\nRobert Bohls, special agent in charge at the FBI, said that they have recovered what they believe to be the weapon used, a high powered bolt action rifle. It was recovered in a wooded area whether the shooter had fled. He said that they also have recovered a footwear impression, a palm print and forearm prints for analysis. He said that they have received about 130 tips.\nOn Capitol Hill, Senate Minority Leader\nChuck Schumer\nand House Minority Leader\nHakeem Jeffries\nspoke to reporters, calling for unity. They were asked about Trump’s comments, made in a video Wednesday night, in which he blamed the “radical left” rhetoric for the attack.\n“The bottom line is this is a time that all Americans should come together and mourn what happened,” Schumer said. “Violence, which affects so many different people of so many different political persuasions is an affliction of America. Coming together is what we ought to be doing, not pointing fingers of blame.”\nJeffries said, “This moment requires leadership that brings the American people together as opposed to trying to further divide us. Political violence in any form, against any American is unacceptable, should be denounced by everyone, and moving forward we have to figure out a better way to come together.”\nWith the Kirk shooting, many commentators on cable and broadcast have reflected on the country’s lurch toward political violence, condemning it in an environment where rage and resentment draws attention, fueling ratings and algorithm-driven traffic on social media.\nPinning blame on what happened started very quickly after the shooting, even as reporters were still gathering facts on what exactly happened.\nMSNBC late on Wednesday dropped political analyst Matthew Dowd who, in the hour after the shooting, talked of Kirk’s own rhetoric reaping the violent act. Dowd later apologized.\nFox News’ Jesse Watters, meanwhile, also seemed to pin blame, citing an unspecified “they” as being “at war with us.” He referred to political violence against those on the right without mentioning the many acts of violence against those on the left.\nOn The Five on Wednesday, Watters said, “Trump gets hit in the ear. Charlie gets shot dead. They came after Kavanaugh with a rifle to his neighborhood. They went after Musk’s cars. They just shot two Jews outside the embassy. Think about it. Scalise got shot, barely survived. It’s happening. We got trans shooters. We got riots in LA.\n“They are at war with us. Whether we want to accept it or not, they are at war with us. And what are we gonna do about it? How much political violence are we going to tolerate? And that’s the question we’re just gonna have to ask ourselves. Fantastic people they are.”\n\nThe assailant is still at large.\n\nBeau Mason, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner, told reporters that authorities interviewed two “persons of interest” on Thursday, but they were later released. Noting that the individuals faced scrutiny and threats, Mason said, “We ask the public to be patient with the investigative process. These individuals were not suspects, they were people of interest…. They don’t deserve that harassment for being subject to that.”\n\nHe said that they have been able to track the movements of the shooter, starting at about 11:52 a.m. MT, when he arrived on campus. “We have tracked his movements on to the campus, through the stairwells, up to the roof, across the roof to a shooting location.” He said that they were able to track his movements after the shooting “as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off of the building and fled off of the campus and enter a neighborhood.”\n\nHe said that they have “good video footage of this individual,” but that is not yet being released. He said that they are using certain technologies to try to identify the individual, and the video will be released if they are not successful.\n\nLater, Utah’s Department of Public Safety rand the FBI released a photo of a person of interest.\n\nRobert Bohls, special agent in charge at the FBI, said that they have recovered what they believe to be the weapon used, a high powered bolt action rifle. It was recovered in a wooded area whether the shooter had fled. He said that they also have recovered a footwear impression, a palm print and forearm prints for analysis. He said that they have received about 130 tips.\n\nOn Capitol Hill, Senate Minority Leader [Chuck Schumer](https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/chuck-schumer\/) and House Minority Leader [Hakeem Jeffries](https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/hakeem-jeffries\/) spoke to reporters, calling for unity. They were asked about Trump’s comments, made in a video Wednesday night, in which he blamed the “radical left” rhetoric for the attack.\n\n“The bottom line is this is a time that all Americans should come together and mourn what happened,” Schumer said. “Violence, which affects so many different people of so many different political persuasions is an affliction of America. Boilerpipe Text	Skip to main content FBI Releases Photo Of Person Of Interest In Charlie Kirk’s Killing; Trump Says He’ll Award Conservative Activist The Medal Of Freedom — Update Donald Trump at the Pentagon for 9/11 ceremony on Thursday Andrew Harnik/Getty Images UPDATED, with person of interest photo released: President Donald Trump said that he will award the Medal of Freedom to Charlie Kirk , the 31-year-old conservative activist and influencer who was shot to death at a Utah rally in what authorities say was a political assassination. “Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said in remarks at a 9/11 commemoration ceremony at the Pentagon. “Our prayers are with his wonderful wife Erika and his beautiful children. Fantastic people they are.” The assailant is still at large. Beau Mason, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner, told reporters that authorities interviewed two “persons of interest” on Thursday, but they were later released. Noting that the individuals faced scrutiny and threats, Mason said, “We ask the public to be patient with the investigative process. These individuals were not suspects, they were people of interest…. They don’t deserve that harassment for being subject to that.” He said that they have been able to track the movements of the shooter, starting at about 11:52 a.m. MT, when he arrived on campus. “We have tracked his movements on to the campus, through the stairwells, up to the roof, across the roof to a shooting location.” He said that they were able to track his movements after the shooting “as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off of the building and fled off of the campus and enter a neighborhood.” He said that they have “good video footage of this individual,” but that is not yet being released. He said that they are using certain technologies to try to identify the individual, and the video will be released if they are not successful. Later, Utah’s Department of Public Safety rand the FBI released a photo of a person of interest. Robert Bohls, special agent in charge at the FBI, said that they have recovered what they believe to be the weapon used, a high powered bolt action rifle. It was recovered in a wooded area whether the shooter had fled. He said that they also have recovered a footwear impression, a palm print and forearm prints for analysis. He said that they have received about 130 tips. On Capitol Hill, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke to reporters, calling for unity. They were asked about Trump’s comments, made in a video Wednesday night, in which he blamed the “radical left” rhetoric for the attack. “The bottom line is this is a time that all Americans should come together and mourn what happened,” Schumer said. “Violence, which affects so many different people of so many different political persuasions is an affliction of America. Fantastic people they are.” The assailant is still at large. Beau Mason, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner, told reporters that authorities interviewed two “persons of interest” on Thursday, but they were later released. Noting that the individuals faced scrutiny and threats, Mason said, “We ask the public to be patient with the investigative process. These individuals were not suspects, they were people of interest…. They don’t deserve that harassment for being subject to that.” He said that they have been able to track the movements of the shooter, starting at about 11:52 a.m. MT, when he arrived on campus. “We have tracked his movements on to the campus, through the stairwells, up to the roof, across the roof to a shooting location.” He said that they were able to track his movements after the shooting “as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off of the building and fled off of the campus and enter a neighborhood.” He said that they have “good video footage of this individual,” but that is not yet being released. He said that they are using certain technologies to try to identify the individual, and the video will be released if they are not successful. Later, Utah’s Department of Public Safety rand the FBI released a photo of a person of interest. Robert Bohls, special agent in charge at the FBI, said that they have recovered what they believe to be the weapon used, a high powered bolt action rifle. It was recovered in a wooded area whether the shooter had fled. He said that they also have recovered a footwear impression, a palm print and forearm prints for analysis. He said that they have received about 130 tips. On Capitol Hill, Senate Minority Leader [Chuck Schumer](https://deadline.com/tag/chuck-schumer/) and House Minority Leader [Hakeem Jeffries](https://deadline.com/tag/hakeem-jeffries/) spoke to reporters, calling for unity. They were asked about Trump’s comments, made in a video Wednesday night, in which he blamed the “radical left” rhetoric for the attack. “The bottom line is this is a time that all Americans should come together and mourn what happened,” Schumer said. “Violence, which affects so many different people of so many different political persuasions is an affliction of America. Coming together is what we ought to be doing, not pointing fingers of blame.” Jeffries said, “This moment requires leadership that brings the American people together as opposed to trying to further divide us. Political violence in any form, against any American is unacceptable, should be denounced by everyone, and moving forward we have to figure out a better way to come together.” With the Kirk shooting, many commentators on cable and broadcast have reflected on the country’s lurch toward political violence, condemning it in an environment where rage and resentment draws attention, fueling ratings and algorithm-driven traffic on social media. Pinning blame on what happened started very quickly after the shooting, even as reporters were still gathering facts on what exactly happened. MSNBC late on Wednesday dropped political analyst Matthew Dowd who, in the hour after the shooting, talked of Kirk’s own rhetoric reaping the violent act. Dowd later apologized. Fox News’ Jesse Watters, meanwhile, also seemed to pin blame, citing an unspecified “they” as being “at war with us.” He referred to political violence against those on the right without mentioning the many acts of violence against those on the left. On The Five on Wednesday, Watters said, “Trump gets hit in the ear. Charlie gets shot dead. They came after Kavanaugh with a rifle to his neighborhood. They went after Musk’s cars. They just shot two Jews outside the embassy. Think about it. Scalise got shot, barely survived. It’s happening. We got trans shooters. We got riots in LA. “They are at war with us. Whether we want to accept it or not, they are at war with us. And what are we gonna do about it? How much political violence are we going to tolerate? And that’s the question we’re just gonna have to ask ourselves. Now, Charlie would want us to put as much pressure on these people as possible. Dana \[Perino, co-host of The Five\] nailed it. This is unacceptable, and has to stop, and it has to stop now, and everybody’s accountable. And we’re watching what they’re saying on television and who’s saying what — the politicians, and the media, and all these rats out there.
