| Boilerpipe Text | My default setting is that social media is a malignancy that cannot be trusted, has no cure and will never go away. But this weekend reminds us that it does have its moments.
At a Major League Baseball game in Miami over the weekend,
Harrison Bader
of the visiting Philadelphia Phillies crushed a home run which landed in a section of the bleachers that had more empty seats than occupied.
As has been customary for generations, a local scramble for the home run ball ensued as it landed. A dad who was in attendance with his family to celebrate his young sonâs birthday was a dozen seats away down one of the empty aisles. He ran over and snagged it.
A woman seated closer to where the ball landed had a meltdown after the dad proudly walked back to his family and dropped the ball in his sonâs mitt, initiated physical contact with the man and demanded that he give the ball to her.
Sorry, but thatâs not how it goes at baseball games⌠or in life.
The video:
The recoiling dad ultimately gave the oddly enraged woman the ball and waved for her to go away. She was incessantly booed, and was recorded making physical contact and arguing with other spectators in the area, including holding up the ball and
giving the middle finger to some of them
.
But in an era when issues with overwhelming support are referred to as â70â30 issuesâ (or even higher at 80-20 etc), social media did its thing, overwhelmingly against the woman, suddenly infamous as a âPhiladelphia Karen.â
Some of the best memes and comments riffed on legendary social meme phenomena:
With Halloween around the bend, Philadelphia Karen even inspired some AI costume concepts.
and, of course, the politicalâŚ
Tuned-in social media personnel from the teams quickly caught on to what was taking place, resulting in the boy not only getting a gift bag from them during the game, he and his family later got to meet Bader, the player who hit the home run, and even got an autographed bat from him.
Which enabled a little more social media social justice:
I donât know what this woman normally does on Monday mornings, but this might be a good day to call-in sick.
