Before You Hit the Trail
🗺️ **Download offline maps**
I always download the [AllTrails map](https://alltrails.pxf.io/09OrLR) before heading out — cell service is limited on many of these trails and having offline access is a game changer.
💧 **Bring more water than you think**
Sacramento summers are brutal. Most of these trails have zero shade mid-route. Even on a short hike, bring at least 2L and start early.
📅 **Best season: Oct–May**
Late fall through spring is ideal — cooler temps and green hills. Spring is the best for wildflowers and seasonal waterfalls. Summer is doable with an early start.
🐾 **Check dog rules before you go**
Some preserves (like Effie Yeaw) don’t allow dogs at all. Each trail listing below notes whether dogs are welcome.

Looking for the best hikes near Sacramento? This local guide covers 25+ trails all within one hour of the city — from peaceful river walks to heart-pumping canyon climbs. Every hike on this list is somewhere I’ve personally explored, often with members of my [Women of Sacramento Hiking Group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/womenofsachiking/), a community of 16,000+ local women.
Whether you need a quick after-work nature fix or a full weekend adventure, you’ll find the right trail here. Looking for more free outdoor activities? Check out my guide to the [best free things to do in Sacramento](https://brittsbellavita.com/free-things-to-do-in-sacramento/).
