In 1962, Uganda won independence from British rule. A 1963 view of Longarone, Italy, a village that was wiped out on Oct. 9, 1963, when some 260 million cubic meters of rock and mud slid into the lake formed by the Vajont Dam, forming a wave of some 50 million cubic meters of water that topped the dam and swept onto the valley below causing some 2,000 victims.
